Il Piatto Pizza Special, 2348 SE Ankeny, 236-4997, Through May 15

Il Piatto smartly wrangles in customers by having delicious Italian cuisine in an adorable, romantic house, but they also provide affordable specials. Sure, we all want to eat upscale, but these days we can't afford the price. Il Piatto's ongoing special is a short list of monthly rotating $8 pasta dishes, which for May include a Basil Pesto Linguine, a flavorful Puttanesca sauce, and a Vegetarian Bolognese. Besides the cheap pasta, they're also expanding their menu to include $8, 12-inch gourmet pizzas. Try the smoked salmon and capers, or the pie topped with grilled chicken, caramelized red onion, salami, gorgonzola, and fresh basil, or artichoke, house-cured prosciutto, roasted garlic, and fresh basil. They also offer a goat cheese, olive, and pepper variety--my favorite combo--and a standard basil, oil, sauce, and cheese Margherita. Prices on their pizza will rise on May 15, so make sure you stop in soon. KS

Cinco de Mayo, Waterfront Park, Thurs-Sun

Besides the rides, the beer, the live music, and the celebration of Portland's ongoing sistership with Mexico's Guadalajara, Cinco de Mayo is very much about the food. Stop by one of the dozens of Mexican food vendors selling tacos, fajitas, chile relleno burritos, baked goods, and more. And be sure to ride that ferris wheel with the flipping cages before you eat.
