Pix Patisserie Block Party, N Failing between Williams and Vancouver, Sat Oct 8, 11am - 8pm, free

For the grand opening of their new restaurant, Pix is throwing one hell of a messy and scrumptious block party. Be sure to wear something with a stretchy waistband and bring a big purse to accommodate all the free eats. If you're not scared of flying goo, check out their rendition of a Double Dare competition or partake in a Pie Throwing Duel. I haven't seen a cutthroat baking rivalry since the season finale of Hell's Kitchen but this block party features a Concoct Yo' Own Dessert Black Box Competition. One secret ingredient, five pastry novices, but only one winner...let the ruthless bake-off begin! All this plus live music from Natural Bridges and Caught in Candy, DJs and dancing 'til close, and there will even be a spread of beers, wines, and liquors in case the sugar rush just doesn't cut it. Julie Powell, Powell's Books for Cooks & Gardeners, 3747 SE Hawthorne, Fri Oct 7, 7 pm, free

Julie Powell, author of Julie & Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen, will be in town for a special reading of her book that has been featured in the likes of Time, People and USA Today. The nonfiction work is about her journey to conquer Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking in just one short year. We're not just talking about learning to make Crème Brule here (which is considered an act of insanity as it is). She made 524 French dishes in just 365 days! CSB

That's some sweet hippie love right there. JWS
