This week we’re absolutely jazzed about Wynne’s full video for “Jaw Morant” (it’s fucking delicious). Plus, an Oregon-based dream-folk duo plays live, and we want you to take note of the powerful voices and talents behind an upcoming Prince birthday tribute night. Interest piqued? Read on for what we want you to Hear in Portland.

MUST SEE:

Upcoming local show(s) featuring local artist(s).

Shady Cove

Oregon-based duo Shady Cove—Sarah Rose and Sarah Nienaber of the dream-pop trio Candace—didn’t mean to create a new band when they began recording songs. However, the two frequent collaborators formed something special in a modest cabin in Shady Cove, Oregon, which would become the inspiration for their moniker. (We’re only a little disappointed they didn’t name their new band the Sarahs.) Those songs went on to become the self-titled debut that dropped last year, via Park the Van Records, on which the “defiantly optimistic” pair explored themes of desire and impulsivity. Shady Cove’s upcoming headliner show at Lollipop Shoppe will also host Seattle experimental folk act Somesurprises, and the debut of a new dream-grunge act, Nome. (Lollipop Shoppe, 736 SE Grand, Sun May 28, 8:30 pm, $12, tickets here, 21+)

MUST LISTEN:

New release(s) from a Portland-relevant artist.

“Jaw Morant" music video release, Wynne

Ever since Wynne released her upbeat and clubby “Jaw Morant” with a teaser clip from the accompanying music video, we’ve been waiting with bated breath for the rest of the song’s juicy visuals. Via a fancy premiere on WorldStarHipHop, our Lake Oswego-raised Portland-based rapper finally dropped the full video, and it is fierce! Throughout, the Margot Robbie look-alike emcee embodies all kinds of roles and references: donning a nun’s habit and costume, imitating Marilyn Monroe atop a breezy subway grate, and mopping on her hands and knees while wearing a Cinderella-style bandana. A read through of the hilarious comments on YouTube indicates that both the video and Wynne’s latest bars are being very well received. One thing is for sure: “Jaw Morant” is Wynne’s best music video yet.

ADDED TO THE QUEUE:

Some upcoming music buzz to put on your radar.

A Birthday Celebration for Prince ft. Saeeda Wright

Come out for a night of Prince-inspired songs and covers played by Portland-based musicians. It's not hard to imagine that if Prince were alive he’d want us all to support hard working musicians with our money, time, and energy. And what better way to celebrate the late icon’s birthday than by sinking into some of the city's blossoming talents. Vocalist Saeeda Wright headlines the night, which feels borderline perfect—she's no stranger to tribute shows and actually sang back-up for Prince as a member of his New Power Generation(!). Wright has a reputation locally for her work as a soloist, often performing with the Oregon Symphony. The rest of the bill is packed with incredible talents, such as percussionist Tyrone Hendrix, trumpeter Farnell Newton, and more! (Alberta Street Pub, 1036 NE Alberta, Wed June 7, 9 pm, $20, 21+)
