Based on the tone of this post, I have to wonder if I'm the only person in Portland that spends any significant time east of Bend or south of Eugene. I won't go as far as to say that in order to call yourself a true Oregonian you have to spend two weeks picking sweet onions in Hermiston or building trails outside of Grants Pass, but I feel that one does oneself a real disservice by not seriously exploring the more rural areas of our great state on a regular basis. The next time you have a free weekend, substitute Seaside with Sumpter, or give up Hood River for Heppner.

You're not. I lived in Pendleton for 2 years, and it was truly wonderful. but every day is not Round Up, and some of the attitudes are the bizarro world of Portland. But you make a great point- too many west of the Cascades look East without open minds. Isn't that what we really dislike about the "others" (whoever they may be?). I enjoy Pendleton for what it is, and believe me, there's no shortage of contempt for Portland from at least a few therabouts.

Part of the charm of this, IMO, is the fact that Sarah appears to have NOT spent a lot of time in rural Oregon. It's awesome that she gets to experience the concentrated madness of the Round-Up. I'm not reading any "tone" here that she thinks this is every day life in Pendleton--and it seems unfair to me to read it that way.

It also seems to me that there's much less closed minded attitudes in western Oregon about the east side then vice-versa. In fact, it seems like the east side is obsessed in general with loathing Portlanders. Its rare to see that attitude reciprocated.
