I had to laugh when I read this. Not because it's funny, but because things never change. I've been going to shows since 1986 and people will always be talking, no matter what. I go to far fewer shows now (I am physically disabled now) and can't imagine how much worse it must be with cell phones. I have seen literally thousands of shows and I have never once experienced a show where people were quiet. Even Elliott Smith at Tramps in the '90s in NYC. He sang softly and played so quietly you had to strain to hear him and it still did not shut anyone up who was there yapping away (just so they could say they were at the show the next day). It's one of the reasons artists like Dinosaur Jr. are so brilliant. They play so painfully, excruciatingly loud that no one can possible talk over them while they are performing. It's physically impossible.

Last time I saw the Dead in Nassau, a guy behind me yelled "play a fucking song already!" about 15 minutes into a very directionless jam.

He was right! If you're expecting to see shit without people being people and participating how audience members generally do at rock and roll shows, listen to a CD.

People always trying to turn shit into classical music. Happened with jazz, now it's happening with rock. Next decorum for hip hop shows? EDM ravers sit down and get quiet please.

Totally agree. This is about idiotic ego-centric fans wanting their presence to be noted by the performer. He knows you are there - his manager reports on ticket sales at some point during the tour. And you obviously "love him" enough to buy a ticket to his show. So please shut the fuck up and let everyone else enjoy the show without another piercing screech from your pie-hole.

Same goes for those who shout out "Play (name of my favorite song here)!!!" Just shut the fuck up. The performer has a set list, they've practiced certain songs with the band, which may or may not be their regular band. He/she knows you have fave songs, otherwise they wouldn't be notable enough to be touring. This isn't the DJ at your cousin's wedding for chrissakes. Let them decide. They aren't changing their set list on the fly for some loud jackass in Row WW Seat 32. If anything, it would serve you right if they decided NOT to play their meticulously rehearsed "Freebird" just to spite you for shouting at them and annoying those around you.

Please wait...
