This past weekend I saw the performance and lecture of/about Stew and the Negro Problem's "Notes on a Native Song".

Soon after the performance began ~10 young adults left the show and at the lecture we 'learned' why.....

After an hour long talk where the artist, Stew, REPEATEDLY said Baldwin had issues, that people had legitimate qualms about Baldwin and that his hero-worship of Baldwin was problematic aforementioned young adults finally chimed in as the last question of the day.... Apparently Baldwin's misogyny means he's work and life should never be discussed unless to shame and chastise him. The young adults seemed adamant that the only presentations of Baldwin's work that were valid were ones that were critical and disparaging of any and all of his contributions to society. It was a revealing moment for me because I remember being young and myopic like these kids were. It also reminded me of another sad fact... #thisiswhytrumpwon
