It's a tough one. There's a lot of rhetoric, not to forget research, behind why sexual harassment victims stay quiet. What's interesting is how periodically victims regain their voice once a social movement has begun calling out the perpetrators. I'm not usually one for victim blaming, but now that the cats out of the bag on all these big wigs in Hollywood everyone seems to be coming out with a laundry list of people to burn. Which makes this I,A interesting. I agree with you David Minne, I don't understand why something like this is allowed to take place and all of a sudden it's the end of the world. Even better, I'd like to know how many times the writer giggled along with him while secretly plotting revenge. Which brings me to the next point I,A, and I hope this one resonates with you and any other victim of sexual harassment (notice I'm not just saying women). Having the fundamental understanding and knowledge that comments and remarks are inappropriate, and keeping an up to date file on it - building a stronger and stronger case against the person, can actually backfire in the court of law. It shows premeditation and it allows room for the defendant to claim you were complicit in workplace flirting etc. So I first apologize for your situation and the shitty person you were dealing with, and I second hope that besides the notes on every comment and situation, that you have a clearly defined record of reporting this person to a superior. If this man chooses to say "you had no problem with it at the time" and his bosses report that you never filed a complaint any time over the years, you can dang well bet this one will end in him taking a sexual harassment workshop and a few lonely nights crying into your pillow wishing you would have stepped up before Weinstein went under.

Good for you, IA. This is the way to handle it. Fuck the other harassers who think you should have to tell him to stop doing it first. They typically stick up for each other.

I/A, I apologize if my first replay seemed cold. I did not intend to "poo poo" the harassment you've had to deal with.

In my company, women who complain to HR are mysteriously fired soon after complaints are filed. Document the shit out of it. Going to HR without loads of evidence just backfires. Dude will just get promoted to another division, and you will be looking for another job, without references. Guys, stop being assholes. You have no idea.
