I remember growing up in the 70's and 80's and you'd often hear about a scourge that inflicted so many people: Ring around the collar. There were magazine ads, TV commercials and jokes on TV regarding this affliction. Fact: You can attribute the rise in people wearing turtle-necks in the 80's so that they could hide their shame.

There wasn't any fanfare that I know of when modern science finally defeated this disease, but I assume they did because you don't hear about it anymore. You'd think there'd be at least some sort of acknowledgment to the scientists who tirelessly worked for decades to find a cure, but nope... ring around the collar just faded into distant memory.

Either way, score one for science!
