And yet: Even if you think you own your home free and clear, you really don’t own it at all. You lease it from the state and it sets the terms and conditions that allow you to occupy the house or sell it to another lessee. The state owns the house and land in perpetuity and you can not alter this arrangement. Don't believe it? Stop paying property taxes.

ALSO: There are plenty of NIMBYs living in apartment buildings who oppose things they don't want in their neighborhoods and they don't own anything.

And finally I leave you with this existential conundrum: can anyone own anything stolen from others? This entire country was stolen from Native Americans (who in fact, never believed they "owned" the land, it was a gift they appreciated and respected). The fact that other people parceled it out and believe they own any of it is a delusion, is it not?

Lol, that's exactly what people who use NIMBY as a pejorative are doing - looking out for what's theirs.

They're making sure they get to maintain their home and lifestyle on their property with freedom from their cunt of a neighbor who is thinks they have the right to a say in what color their neighbor paints their shutters or if their grass can be longer than 2 inches.

Nextdoor raised a billion dollar valuation off the backs of NIMBYs. How could a market that lucrative have a negative connotation?
