Sadly none of this is surprising. Someone I know and love well has done the "can I touch your hair" thing to a black woman and I was like OMG WTF ARE YOU DOING. Can you imagine if strangers walked up to you and asked to touch you or just touched you without asking? FUCK NO. I feel for you, writer of this post. I also don't believe for one second it will change what you are experiencing.

Other commenters here get super pissed when I mention this, but I used to live in NYC and when I moved from Brooklyn to Seattle I was like "where the fuck did everyone go why is everyone here white?" Well, everyone there actually is NOT white, they are just (for the most part) segregated and a small fraction of the population. The cities in the Pacific Northwest claim to be uber progressive and yet they are painfully provincial and deeply racist. And Oregon? Oregon is the Mississippi of the PNW. Oregon did not finally remove racist language from the state constitution until 2002. Yeah, 2002. Black people were not allowed to live here or own property here until almost 1930. Oregon is one of the states in the U.S. with the largest white supremacist hate groups on watch by the SPLC (and the FBI). And if Trump's presidency hasn't made it painfully clear, this country is deeply vested in maintaining its white supremacist system and is not about to give it up anytime soon and not without an all out bloody revolution.
