There are many causes of homelessness. #1 being that no one working a minimum wage job in the United States of American can afford to rent an apartment IN ANY STATE on their salary alone. While corporations pay no taxes and refuse to pay living wages, while raking in tens of BILLIONS in profit.
2 is being a veteran or suffering from any illness or abuse (mental or physical)
3 is substance abuse (which is typically something that is used to self-medicate and/or cope with #2)
This country has the means to provide housing to every single person in this country.
Homelessness is something we ALLOW in this country.
This country lacks the will do anything about it.
Tell your son that.
Your son's a douche bag or an idiot. Of course "drugs", which is a dog whistle for "personal responsibility" are a big issue, but like fuck off with that libertarian bullshit, kid! Listen to your father. It doesn't matter if someone is a piece of shit, they still deserve basic human shelter, services, and care. For chrissake!
Portland has always had homeless. Record high numbers and more visible now as they openly camp on downtown sidewalks.
The drugs come after something else- after mental illnesses, after trauma, after eviction, after something. The drugs are an escape.
