I suspect all LGBTQ survivors of the 80's have our own traumas that we continue to deal with. We all have different ways we coped then and now as well. I was cowardly, in that I valued my career in the military more than my dignity as a member of a very endangered community. I stayed informed of the movements trying to keep our brothers alive as they withered and died, I was "Silent" despite the knowledge that equaled "Death" for so many. I'd like to say my silence was solely because of the military, but the reality is I was hiding in my closet out of fear.
Overall I was lucky, I survived but I deal with the shame of my silence every day.
Thank you,
