It took me a few minutes to realize the author means "pedestrians," not "walkers" as in a wheeled device that assists with mobility.

William Vollmann once said if he had the power he would get rid of cars because they have no respect for distance. He added that he would also remove TV because it had not respect for time. I tend to agree. Cars suck and what ends up happening is a power complex by way that drivers feel detached from the people outside the car, while simultaneously they also feel completely safe, like a god wielding his/her mighty power before us (i.e, vroom vroom goes the Volvo). But for whom, for whom, does this impress? Not me.

Cars are definitely on their way out, calamitously with an economic collapse or gradually as we devise ways to be less dependent upon them. The all-battery BEV tech CANNOT replace cars/trucks as we use them today. The EV with the most potential is plug-in hybrid PHEV tech. Keep a light touch on the gas pedal and a PHEV can get 100 -150mpg eventually with combustible hydrogen in the ICEngine of the PHEV+H drivetrain.
