Ever wonder why Mediterranean women always look so damn great and healthy? One of their secrets, one that has been used for centuries, is olive oil. This kitchen staple is super healthy when consumed (it has a high content of monounsaturated fatty acids, which are good for keeping good cholesterol up and bad cholesterol down, and a high content of antioxidative substances) and it works wonders on skin by repairing damage and keeping it soft, smooth, and supple. Extra virgin olive oil is best as it is minimally processed and retains the most nutrients for the maximum effect. Try the following tips and you'll be as beautiful and glowing as the aforementioned Mediterranean women (without the tan of course. This is Portland after all.)

-Skin Moisturizer: Just rub it on, easy! (A little goes a long way, and it is best to use on damp skin as the oil will absorb more easily and won't leave skin greasy.)

-Exfoliator: Mix olive oil and sea salt together and use all over the body. Much cheaper than the stuff you buy at the store and works just as well. Add essential oils to make it smell nice.

-Make-up Remover: Add a little to a cotton ball and use as you would regular make-up remover. It removes facial make-up as well. (When used consistently olive oil can soften the skin around the eyes and smooth out wrinkles.)

-Hair: Apply to dry hair, concentrating mostly on the ends, wrap your hair in a hot, damp towel or a shower cap, and leave it on for at least half an hour. You could leave it on overnight as well, but make sure to put a towel on your pillow so you don't end up with an oily mess. Shampoo/condition as usual.

-Nails/Hands: Just rub a few drops on your cuticles and your nails will be moisturized and healthy. For really dry hands rub a generous amount all over hands, put on gloves, and wear overnight.

-Scars: Olive oil is great for minimizing the appearance of scars due to it's high vitamin E and K content. Just rub 1 tbsp. of olive oil on the scar for 5 minutes to loosen the scar tissue. Leave on for 10 minutes and wipe off. Mix 1 tsp. of olive oil and 1 tsp. of baking soda and rub on the scar (to exfoliate.) Rinse off. Do this everyday to speed the healing process.
