A Burlesque Expert Takes on Burlesque. She's Not Impressed.

BURLESQUE Xtina's no Mae West.

Complaining that the movie Burlesque is nothing like actual Burlesque is just like Harry Potter nerds complaining that the movies aren't like the book. No shit, Sherlock, it's a movie! If you want actual burlesque, there is no shortage of annoying fat girls in dumb costumes jiggling to horrible songs all over Portland.

I liked it better the first time, when it was called Showgirls.

(which is, by the way, the best burlesque movie ever made)

I thought Rayleen Courtney's article was very diplomatic. There have been articles and interviews all over the country with authentic burlesque performers, many of them quite famous, and they have all expressed a similar view. There was no whining about it, just a matter-of-fact and tactful review. What was she supposed to do, lie? Sugarcoat it and mislead the general public? There are already enough people who are completely unaware of the high quality of burlesque here in Portland. Hopefully this movie will inspire them to see this for themselves. And maybe, just maybe, uneducated dumbasses like Molly Maverick can stop covering up their ignorance with cowardly internet temper tantrums. Or maybe not. I think he just a douche nozzle.

"If you want actual burlesque, there is no shortage of annoying fat girls in dumb costumes jiggling to horrible songs all over Portland." wow, that's just really unnecessary, and also untrue. Being a dick does not automatically make you seem clever. This is a discussion forum not a middle school bathroom stall. I know that it's sort of the norm for people to hide behind the anonymity of online comments to unleash their assholism (before I get a "No shit Sherlock!") but that doesn't make it any less disappointing.
If you're gonna name a movie "Burlesque," then yeah, it should resemble burlesque, it's like naming a movie "Tennis," then showing ping pong. The only people who are going to want to see this movie are going to be people who are into dance so of course they're gonna care. When I wanna geek out on a hip hop movie I don't rent Dirty Dancing.

Please wait...
