I don't know that it is fair to say he was widely despised. certainly there were those who shunned him (the color of his skin probably had more than a little to do with that), there were also those who appreciated his courage in making that decision. It certainly cost him a precious part of his career as a fighter, there is no doubt about that. Great review, I am going to see this soon.
