And the Emmy for Most Egregious Omission from the List of 2018 Emmy nominees goes to...

Nominations for the 70th Emmy Awards, recognizing excellence in the field of making engaging streaming content for laptop computers and phones the art of television, were announced this morning. Lots of worthy and talented people and shows were recognized. I'm not saying you should care. I'm not saying I care. I am, however, just saying:

The idea of not nominating Lakeith Stanfieldā€”whose portrayal of Darius on season two of Atlanta is plainly the most original, creative, nuanced, surreal, complex, and daring acting work since TV became goodā€”as Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Comedy Series (alongside his equally but differently worthy co-star Brian Tyree Henry) is just like... What do the 23,000 voting members of the Television Academy think "outstanding" even means?

All of which is to say that if you haven't seen season two of Atlanta, you haven't seen the most formally and socially disruptive talents TV has to offer. (You can also see Stanfield shine in Boots Riley's Sorry to Bother You, which opens this weekend, and which ace Stranger film critic Kathy Fennesy called "miraculous.")

The Academy agreed about the show, nominating it in 16 categories, including all the major onesā€”the most for a comedy series, though whether it even is still a comedy after the grim, ingenious inventions of "Robbin' Season," or whether series creator and frequent writer and director Donald Glover is even still the lead actor... well, let's just hope it sweeps.

Side note: Those 16 nominations made Atlanta only the fifth most-nominated show this year, behind Game of Thrones (22), Saturday Night Live (21), Westworld (21), and The Assassination Of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story (18), which is another way of thinking about just how much TV there is to watch and never watch. And we'll be right back with more after these messages.

The full list of nominees, including all the categories like "Outstanding Technical Direction, Camerawork, Video Control For A Limited Series, Movie Or Special," as well as four or five categories apiece for different kinds of costumery and make-up ("(Non-Prosthetic" is a qualifier in a couple of them), and sound design, etc.ā€”runs to 85 breathtaking pages.

A few noteworthy facts about these less publicized categories: Carrie Brownstein is nominated for Outstanding Directing For A Variety Series (the "Riot Spray" episode of Portlandia). Jonathan Coulton is up for Best Original Music and Lyrics for a song called "High Crimes and Misdemeanors," which was on the show The Good Fight (no, not Wife, Place, or Times); he's up against Steve Martin and Martin Short in the category. And the funniest person on Twitter, Megan Amram, succeeded in nabbing two nominations for her "Short Form Series," An Emmy for Megan.

Plus Anthony Bourdain, Wild Wild Country, Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, et al.

(Again, I'm not saying I care care, but I am a human being after all, and I would applaud victories for Atlanta, The Americans, Donald Glover, Matthew Rhys, Keri Russell, Sandra Oh, RuPaul, RuPaulā€™s Drag Race, Patrick Melrose, Benedict Cumberbatch, Mandy Patinkin, Zazie Beetz, Laurie Metcalf, Brian Tyree Henry, Katt Williams, Hiro Murai, Steve Martin & Martin Short, The Zen Diaries Of Garry Shandling, American Masters, Blue Planet II, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mark Frost, and/or David Lynch.)
