A dull, floppy, and fictionalized account of the life of Melita Norwood, an Englishwoman who gave A-bomb secrets to Soviets after World War II. The virtually espionage-free Red Joan leaps haphazardly backward and forward through time, with old Joan played by Dame Judi Dench at her Dench-iest, with young Joan played by Sophie Cookson (Roxy from the Kingsman movies). The charming Cookson tries her best (Dench barely registers), but legendary theater director Trevor Nunn doesn’t seem to have much of an eye for film, turning the story into a sub-par episode of Masterpiece.
