DJ Beyonda, a Memphis transplant, has been hitting heads with conscience across the States and Europe for years. Now she's planning on setting up shop in Portland and is sure to help set a new standard of what a DJ should be. Like Johnnie Taylor says, "You better take care of your homework, fella; if you don't, somebody will." Anyone who doesn't study what Beyonda is putting down is sleeping on the vent.
Top five, hit me off.
David Axelrod--The Auction LP (Decca)
Cyne--"Movements" 12" (Botanica Del Jibaro)
Red & the Eyerights--"Homegrown pt.1" 7" (Memphix)
LA Carnival--"Blind Man" 7" (Stones Throw)
How'd you get involved with Sirens Echo?
I was fortunate to open at a Lifesavas show and spoke to Vursatyl about wanting to hook up with the Sirens. He was a great encouragement to me, and he spoke to Toni Hill about how we should collaborate. That set everything up and a month later we opened the Zion I show.
Do you prefer hitting the turns with emcees or in a club?
I like both. I love the technical demands of hiphop. Also I love getting people up out their seats! I like doing a mash up of genres too, creating a journey with beats just for the head nod.
Do you have plans for any tours or are you more interested in getting something going in town?
I've toured a ton since moving here. So I hope to team up with some heads and play a night here. I just want to meet other record geeks and stay inspired about music.
When's the next time people can see you do your thing?
December 18, [at Poh Hop]. Poh Hop is an annual Portland hiphop event that is featuring a female hiphop show at Ash St. It should be dope, groups performing are Siren's Echo, Good Sista Bad Sista, plus DJs! CHAZZ MADRIGAL
