WEDNESDAY, JULY 8

MUSIC—Like most creative types, musicians generally get worse as they get older. Thank Christ Elvis Costello—who's been brilliant for four decades and counting—is the exception to the rule. Expect some of Costello's untouchable classics tonight, but don't be surprised if a few of his excellent newer tracks—like those from Wise Up Ghost, his 2013 collaboration with the Roots—sneak onto the playlist, too. EH
Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, 1037 SW Broadway, 8 pm, $46.50-89, all ages

BOOKS—Lidia Yuknavitch has been through some shit. From losing her first-born child, to wrestling with addiction, to standing on the edges of homelessness and psychosis, the Portland-based author owns her very eventful existence—and puts it to use. Her latest, The Small Backs of Children, is Yuknavitch's first novel for a major publisher. DVH
Powell's City of Books, 1005 W Burnside, 7:30 pm, FREE

THURSDAY, JULY 9

MUSIC—We were going to recommend Wednesday's show at Mississippi Studios, where Steve Albini's Shellac is going to light everyone's smarty-pants on fire. But it's sold out. So now we'd like to suggest the warming glow of the post-hardcore math-rockers at Revolution Hall on Thursday, but guess what, snoozers? It's sold out, too. Check in with your favorite scalper. CF
w/Shannon Wright; Revolution Hall, 1300 SE Stark, #110, 8 pm, $15 (or scalper's choice), all ages

DANCE—Conduit Dance's fourth annual DANCE+ Festival is here, and the company's bringing a stacked lineup of out-of-town choreographers and local performers alike to Reed's Massee Performance Lab. If you're dance-curious but couldn't be paid to go see classical ballet, this is the festival for you, promising stodge-free contemporary dance. MB
Reed College's Performing Arts Building, 3203 SE Woodstock, Wed-Sat, 7 & 9 pm (two different programs), $17-20

FRIDAY, JULY 10

MUSIC—Three of Southern California's funnest, loudest bands make their way up the coast for a delightful night of quick tempos, excessive distortion, and powdered-sugar punk rock. Audacity turn catchy pop melodies into beer-soaked bedlam, while Together Pangea's Badillac includes charred-edge punk jams alongside more introspective stuff, and White Night shakes up the sounds of classic garage and punk rock. NL
Bunk Bar, 1028 SE Water, 9:30 pm, $12

COMEDY—Marc Maron's sold out (thanks a lot, Obama!), but if you love whip-smart comedy, you're still in luck! With her brilliant crowd-work and the greatest-ever feminist jokes (srsly), loveable Canadian DeAnne Smith was one of the best things about last year's All Jane No Dick comedy fest, and she's back—with (bonus!) the delightful Whitney Streed and Belinda Carroll! MB
Funhouse Lounge, 2432 SE 11th, 9 pm, $10-15

SATURDAY, JULY 11

MUSIC & MORE—Fancy goth/church-themed bar Church is in the midst of a summer series called Hot Mass, combining live music—today's edition features Sun Angle and Phone Call—as well as a pop-up featuring local vendors. In cahoots with XRAY.fm, it's either a hot way to cool down, or a cool way to stay hot. MS
w/Lost Cities, Holla 'n' Oates; Church, 2600 NE Sandy, 4 pm, $5

MUSIC—Support the musicians of tomorrow today at the Rock 'n' Roll Camp for Girls Showcase Concert. As you know, this camp prides itself on building self-esteem in teens through rock music—learning how to play, produce, and perform. This concert marks the end of the camp's first session, and promises a fun performance filled with the passion of youth. Don't miss it! WSH
Alberta Rose Theatre, 3000 NE Alberta, 1 pm, $7-10, all ages

SUNDAY, JULY 12

MUSIC—The slinky, glitter-paint grooves of Minden are ideal for an evening on the patio at Rontoms, so wear something breathable for a summertime outdoor dance party. Even better, Orquestra Pacifico Tropical turn up the heat for some psychedelically tinged cumbia to wipe away the cobwebs. NL
Rontoms, 600 E Burnside, 8:30 pm, FREE

FILM—It's summer, and that means it's blockbuster season. But instead of being underwhelmed by Jurassic World or Terminator Genisys, do it RIGHT: Head to the Hollywood this weekend to see Raiders of the Lost Ark on 35mm! There are very few perfect movies; Raiders is one of them. And on the big screen, Steven Spielberg and George Lucas' classic is even better. EH
Hollywood Theatre, 4122 NE Sandy, Sat & Sun, 2 & 7 pm, $8

MONDAY, JULY 13

MUSIC—There are plenty of great, free outdoor music concerts this summer (go to portlandoregon.gov/parks for the complete lineup)... but here's the best one. Ural Thomas and the Pain is by far Portland's greatest soul band, and their music hearkens back to the time when R&B ruled the world. Bring a picnic blanket and enjoy the glorious music and sunshine. WSH
Sellwood Riverfront Park, SE Spokane & Oaks Park, 6:30 pm, FREE, all ages

MUSIC—Country singer/songwriter Lyle Lovett and his crazy hair have been touring his latest album, Release Me, since its release in 2012 (maybe it's time to release another one?). It's a mix of originals and covers of some of his favorites. Fun fact: Besides marrying Julia Roberts in the '90s, did you know he's also been more than a dozen movies and an episode of Miami Vice!? SRK
Edgefield, 2126 SW Halsey, Troutdale, 6:30 pm, $42-83, all ages

TUESDAY, JULY 14

COMIC BOOKS—What's better than a comic book launch party? Oh, just a little thing called a TWOFER comic book release party with two brand-new Drawn & Quarterly releases. Anders Nilsen has a beautifully packaged release of his sketchbooks, while Marc Bell is showing off his graphic novella, Stroppy. This should be a double dose of delight incarnate. CF
Floating World Comics, 400 NW Couch, 6 pm, FREE, all ages

FILM—I left Amy—the new, heartbreaking documentary about Amy Winehouse—with trails of mascara down my face. Go for the archival footage, the emotional interviews, and the way it celebrates her not only as a musician, but as a generous, sensitive, funny human being who was in over her head. MS
Various Theaters, see Film Times for showtimes
