WEDNESDAY, JULY 29

MUSIC—Brooklyn guitar maestros Ratatat just dropped their first album in five years! People you should automatically tune out: anyone griping that the group hasn't "progressed" enough in that time. People you should listen to: Ratatat, which is kicking out great swells of danceable happiness as always, and any scalper who can give you tickets to this sold-out show. DIRK VANDERHART
w/Despot; Roseland, 8 NW 6th, 9 pm, $28 (sold out), all ages

MIAMI VICE—Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs are most at home on Miami's streets. But in "The Prodigal Son," the movie-length episode of Miami Vice, the two venture to NEW YORK CITY??? Tonight, Re-Run Theater presents it on the big screen, where you can enjoy a chilled wine cooler as guest stars Pam Grier and Gene Simmons cavort to the electric majesty of Phil Collins. ERIK HENRIKSEN
Hollywood Theatre, 4122 NE Sandy, 7:30 pm, $8

RIGSKETBALL—Sometimes in life you have to improvise. That's how Rigsketball—a sport resembling basketball played off a touring band's van—came to be, and my has it flourished. The annual three-on-three tournament and mini-music festival features the talents of bands like Orquestra Pacifico Tropical, Hustle and Drone, Talkative, and more on both "court" and stage. MARJORIE SKINNER

COMEDY—You can trust Shelley McLendon. She's brought you laugh-out-loud productions like Road House, Lost Boys, and Rudolph. She's directing the new two-women sketch comedy show Night on the Town starring Lori Ferraro and MADtv's Brooke Totman. One thing's for certain: Totman's mad hysterical—this show promises to be a kick in the funny pants. COURTNEY FERGUSON
Defunkt Theatre, 4319 SE Hawthorne, opens Fri July 31, Thurs-Sat 8 pm, through Aug 22, $15-20

SATURDAY, AUGUST 1

COMEDY—You probably know Joe Mande from his razor-sharp writing for Parks and Recreation and Kroll Show, or possibly from justifying the existence of Twitter via @joemande. BUT YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW that he also does stand-up, having been on everything from Conan to Comedy Central. Tonight he's telling jokes at Mississippi Studios, and it will be fun. ERIK HENRIKSEN
w/Hutch Harris; Mississippi Studios, 3939 N Mississippi, 10 pm, $14-17

MUSIC—With a cheap cover and some of the deepest cuts you're likely to hear in town, the occasional 50: A Possible History of Dance Music is a dance fancier's dream. DJs Cooky Parker, Gregarious, and Freaky Outty take your feet on an aural-temporal tour from 1965 to the present day. Suck it, H.G. Wells. DIRK VANDERHART
Holocene, 1001 SE Morrison, 9 pm, $5

SUNDAY, AUGUST 2

FILM—Last week, the Laurelhurst showed Ridley Scott's 1979 sci-fi horror classic Alien—and this week, they're following that up exactly as they should, with 1986's Aliens. James Cameron's radically different sequel is still one of the finest action movies made—a perfect cocktail of thrills, scares, and a heroic Sigourney Weaver. (There's a reason she got an Oscar nomination for this.) ERIK HENRIKSEN
Laurelhurst Theater, 2735 E Burnside, see Movie Times for showtimes, $4

MUSIC—Tender Loving Empire offshoot label Bug Hunt features two of the bands on its roster tonight: Brooklyn-by-way-of-Oregon skitter-pop duo My Body, and excellent Portland-by-way-of-Hawaii volume-crush rock band the Fourth Wall, whose fantastic Lovely Violence album has just been put out by Bug Hunt. NED LANNAMANN
w/DoublePlusGood; Mississippi Studios, 3939 N Mississippi, 9 pm, $5

MONDAY, AUGUST 3

FILM—Watching I Am Chris Farley is kind of like having whiplash... in a good way. Using clips and interviews from his family and friends, the documentary tells the story of an immensely talented comedian who died far too soon. It's both very sad and very funny—hence that whiplash feeling. Co-director Brent Hodge will be Skyping in for a Q&A. ERIK HENRIKSEN
NW Film Center's Whitsell Auditorium, 1219 SW Park, 7 pm, $9

MUSIC—Metal is not easy, and High on Fire refuse to rely on cookie-cutter bullshit. After 17 years, Matt Pike and his band are just as vibrant as when they began, finding new riffs to rip up and new themes to tackle, while riding a wave of glorious noise like the hesher philosopher-kings of metal they are. BOBBY ROBERTS
w/Pallbearer, Lucifer, Venomous Maximus; Hawthorne Theatre, 1507 SE César E. Chávez, 7:30 pm, $17-20

TUESDAY, AUGUST 4

FILM—Who's ready to watch shit blow up?! The fifth movie in the Mission: Difficult But Not Really Impossible franchise will have you spazzing out over car chases, airplane stunts, and death-defying carryings-on. Tiny action star Tom Cruise, together with Simon Pegg and director Christopher McQuarrie, pretty much guarantee a wham-bam good time in Mission: Impossible—Rogue Nation. COURTNEY FERGUSON
Various theaters, see Movie Times for showtimes

ENCHANTMENT—Kids, schmids. You don't need a rugrat to enjoy the magic that is Enchanted Forest—a one-of-kind independently conceived amusement park that's like a sculpture park fantasyland on magic mushrooms. Truly one of Oregon's cultural treasures, a summer without a spin through its "European Village," "Western Town," and "Storybook Lane" is a summer misspent. MARJORIE SKINNER
Enchanted Forest, 8462 Enchanted Way SE, Turner, 10 am-6 pm, $9.95-10.95, enchantedforest.com
