What a spineless pussy. You can quote me on that.
2
What BlackedOut said.

I think Sam should take away the police department and give it to Randy for this.
3
Lets see.... given the time it takes to do an internal investigation, that could be a cushy desk job for the next three years. That's if he gets over his 'disability'.

4
Dan was for showing a spine before he was against it.
5
It's nice to assured every now and that The State is actually just as fucked as I like to think it is.
6
Chick... en... shit....

The only person on the council who demonstrates any type of spine whatsoever is Randy, and he's a petty belligerent.

I can't believe so many people in Portland seem proud of our government. We've managed to elect five people to City Council and not one of them is actually a "leader" worth the term.
7
what does the band "The Mean Jeans" think about this decision? I'm really starting to doubt the commissioners' authority and I might just write-in my favorite local bands for those public offices.
8
Perhaps there's another take on this. Could it be that the real decision here is to actually conduct an investigation of the incident before determining if anyone is at fault?
9
Glad to hear Saltzman reversed his decision, which should never have been made in the first place. Look at the shootings in Tacoma as an example. Cops are targets every day, anywhere. The "alleged" shooter there was a criminal when he was 17, and he never changed. The "12 year old" resisting arrest is probably on the same career path unless someone intervenes. "Vindicating" her criminal behavior by punishing the police for trying to thwart her misdeeds and ignoring the rules certainly won't do anything to help keep our society safe.

@Polis

You mean like the investigation they did that said the officers did nothing wrong when they beat James Chasse to death?
11
@BlackedOut

It wasn't just the Police Bureau that reached the conclusion that officers did not "beat James Chasse to death." It was also the DA's office and the coroner.

My suggestion is pretty simple. Shouldn't the facts, not pre-determined opinions and agendas, rule the day? Perhaps more significantly, if we can't afford cops due process, how do we expect them to respect the due process rights of others?

Portland: The City That Works, Except When It Comes to Timely Public Safety Alerts and Police Culpability (Oh, and No One Can Find a Decent Job)...But the Food Carts Are Marvelous!
13
You know, if they were throwing him in jail, it'd be fine to say wait for an investigation. But they are not throwing him in jail, they are throwing him in paid vacation.

The reason for civilian oversight of police is to occasionally step in and say "hey, maybe that was fine according to regulations, but it was still a pretty messed up thing to do."

Out of the vegan bakeries and into the streets!

Out of the craft cocktail bars and into the streets!

Out of the Mommy & Me playgroups and into the streets!
15
Just shut up and do what the cops tell you.

Apparently this applies to city commissioners as well as common citizens. At least we're even-handed about it.
16
@bigsislilsis: That was a phenomenoal piece of trolling; equating investigating Humphreys with causing the Lakewood shooting... BRAVO! 10/10 trolling. We rarely see such good writing here on /b/town.
17
@polis The state medical examiner concluded that James Chasse died from "trauma to the chest" and that his injuries were likely caused by a kick or a knee drop to the torso.

I'm not sure how you define "beating someone to death," but I feel like hitting someone in such a way that their injuries cause them to die should count.
18
Police union state, yay!
19
this is fucking embarrassing...
can ANYONE in the city nut up and take the police by the leash?
where is Randy Leonard on this?
yet further proof that Sam is not up to the job of mayor, and Dan Saltzman is not up to the job of police commissioner.
we have just seen the end of Sam as mayor and Saltzman as a commissioner.
20
So the cops just bullied a Commissioner to back down from disciplining one of their own and THAT IS HIS JOB??????????
In closing I'll add Punk-Ass Bitch to "spineless pussy"!!!!
21
OK...sit back and take it as this.

The people that work at places like Albertina Kerr that deal with children of all ages with behavior disorders have to deal with girls and boys of this age and many have the same temperament if not worse as this girl.

If they so much as leave a bruise on a minor they can lose their jobs and could possibly be sued. Three adult male cops can tackle a minor and shoot her with a beanbag gun and if you think that's ok you're sick.
22
Yup, Sam has no moral authority and cannot effectively lead - here's yet one more example. And the rest of the city leadership is a mess - the other four commissioners are useless.

It's no wonder the PPD feels like it can do what ever it wants - can't really blame them when the mayor gets away with admittedly lying to get elected and is not held to the city code of ethics as other city employees are.
23
That had to hurt.
24
Okay, I'll wade in with my ad hominem attacks as well. Usually, getting fucked in the ass should be a pleasant experience... Unless you're getting fucked in the ass by this guy: http://blogtown.portlandmercury.com/images… Then you're being pumped full of guido shame.
25
is it my imagination or does the boss from the Portland Police Union look like he should be working for the Teamsters circa 1970 in New Jersey?
26
At first, I was upset about Humphreys shooting the girl with a bean bag round. However, after reading and hearing about her criminal background, I think she actually got off pretty light. I do think, however, that Humphreys should have let another officer shoot her with the bean bag. I think that if that had happened, it wouldn't have been such a big deal. The girl in question seems to be pretty incorrigible, and I think she is headed for a lifetime of prison.
27
So does this mean we "the city of Portland" accept the right of the police to shoot 12 years old at close range with bean bags?

- Desk Job - Yard job, Union Job or No job ...what we are now hearing sounds like: - bean bagging teenagers in Portland "is acceptable procedure"

28
uh-oh! here's what really happened: the poor guy got kicked in parts private and rather than dying like James Chasse did when the Pigsters kicked him, our Main Man--for the moment that is--had a sack rupture and lost all his hard-found Testosterone that gave him the courage to take on the Pastards last week! so, once again we're back to such is life in the Big City...deal with it!
29
The Police own us and the police union owns the police. We citizens have to get a grip and start running the show.
