"Curiously, all but one of the doctors who staffed the Panthers' clinic were white."
I take issue with this line because it perpetuates the myth (word choice: curiously) that the Panthers excluded non-African Americans. The Panthers fought for the rights of African Americans, but they also fought to meet the basic needs of ALL people in poverty. It was not uncommon for Panther chapters to ally with white community leaders.
Thank you for covering this very informative event. I wanted to share my write-up of the presentation with you, because I find numerous problems with your coverage of the Black Panther Party's activities and the March 18 event. Namely, your report failed to explain the Black Panthers' mission or to provide a larger sociopolitical context for the organization's activities. Additionally, your piece neglected to mention any critique of the media whatsoever provided that night. This is curious, given that scrutiny of the press was one of the main topics discussed; a lens so key to the lecture, in fact, that even the title (not mentioned by you once) was โ'Weโre going to defend ourselves': The Portland Chapter of the Black Panther Party & Local Media Response." More of my analysis can be found here: http://www.allvoices.com/contributed-news/…
so the cute elderly nurses need to have their wardrobes described but the wiry postman does not? Do we women ever escape the judging gaze even when old?
