We've Done the Hard Work—All You Have to Do Is Vote!

Good bloody work, team. It's good to see my endless phone calls come to something substantial. It's a shame we couldn't print all this.
2
Saltzman totally talks like a stoned robot. You nailed it.
3
@Stefan: Thanks for making all the phone calls, and for scheduling the interviews. Your help was invaluable in making this happen.
4
Awesome work, Merc troops. Time to sit down with a bottle of wine tonight and get to voting!

I voted a couple days ago, and I'm amused to see that our ballots and reasoning more or less match (though I picked Bradbury, Metzger & Burkholder), right down to the County Commissioner uber-confusion.

I will freely admit that I have no fucking clue what a Metro President or County Commissioner does. Is there a summary of all that somewhere?

Nice endorsements, Merc! I have one small bone of contention. I'm friends with Tom Markgraf and have been dismayed to see him bullied about by his $900k bill to the CRC. First, Tom had staff at various times over the nearly 6 years with the CRC.
But, ignoring that for now, let's pretend that he personally earned $900k and do some simple math. $900,000/5.5 years = $163,636. As someone who's self-employed, he has to pay an additional 7% in social security, dropping his per annum to $152,181. Also, he's not getting any retirement matching, PERS, 401K, etc. Most employers match up to 15%, but let's say he's missing out on a 10% benefit, dropping his salary to $136,963. Also, as a consultant, he's paying his own health insurance, let's say $1000/month for a family of four, dropping his annual salary to $124,963.
That's just to bring it to the level that anyone would earn at a typical employer. Is $125,000 a good salary? Yes! But the guy has been in the business for over 20 years and has a masters degree. Is that a scandalous sum? No way.

@CC Glad to hear we're in touch with your zeitgeist old chum.

Metro President directs Metro, basically. Land use, garbage, some tourism, and the zoo. In David Bragdon's case that has meant smart policy wonkiness, a willingness to take on a few internal fights, and using his sense of humor to promote and market the organization across the region. He's going to be a tough one to replace, because most people who'd want his job are boring as fuck.

County Commissioners generally mess around for a few years before quitting in disgrace (usually after not showing up enough), going to the legislature (a sideways move), or getting onto city council (a promotion, if only in terms of the amount of political attention you get). It's one of five votes on a board that controls the sheriff's office, mental health and addictions services. Oh, and libraries. The budgets get cut every year. Your best hope is to do something snazzy that's not in the remit, and use it to launch a bid for city office. Or get promoted to chair and hope somebody dies at the state level (see Ted Wheeler, now state treasurer).

The pay check for both jobs is pretty good though. More than $80k in both cases.

"$124,963.

That's a fucking scandalous sum in Oregon, dear. With our record unemployment, that's a scandalous sum. Are you really telling me that Markgraf would say on the record, "Hey, I don't earn that much." Nope. He's rich. But as we said, "fundamentally decent."
9
With respect, Matt, it's not scandalous. Check out the senior salaries at ODOT: http://www.oregon.gov/cgi-bin/ccrt.cgi?pg=num&sec1=7000&sec2=7999
10
@Golson. Yes. They're scandalous, too.
11
@golson Boohooo! He doesn't make THAT much money!!!

live in east county, just voted last night. agree with most of the endorsements but don't get the critisism of smith (my state rep). i was really proud he was my rep when i read in the mercury about how he stood up to the mayor with regard to funding and attention being paid to our part of town. you also did a ride along story with him as he showed a reporter just how much attention this part of town needs. i don't see any other reps doing anything like that. so what's with the snark?

i live in east county and just voted last night. i agree with most of your endorsements but don't get the comments about smith (my state rep). i was really glad to read in your paper that he stood up to the mayor at a city council meeting about the lack of funding in our part of town. also read the story when he took one of your reporters around the area to show how much need there is out here, and you guys said he did that with someone from the mayor's office too. i don't see any other state reps doing that for their district, so what's with the snark? what hasn't he done for our part of town that you think he should do?

"Throw a dart at your ballot"? Seriously? Couldn't put down the bong long enough to actually figure out there was a candidate (Karol Collymore) who stands head and shoulders above the others? And then to imply that Karol was not much more than a snappy dresser....and then to comment on Van Orden's stylish glasses? Hm. You couldn't be bothered to talk about how Karol helped get a new library in Kenton...what was the last time you visited Kenton, btw? There's a revival of that little area going on. St. John's has a farmer's market now....that's in part due to Karol Collymore. Food labeling, the one-stop crisis center....and don't forget she's a champion for LGBT rights and a woman's right to choose.

Y'all fucked up good and proper.
15
Hey Commenty Colin, here's what the current Metro Prez does: http://news.oregonmetro.gov/6/page.cfm/abo….
16
Not a very convincing argument for Kitzhaber. I was undecided between those two (don't really like either of them, but there's no other choice) and the above text actually steered me slightly toward Bradbury. He clearly has a better vision if not much of a track record. Kitzhaber had eight years and didn't do much with them. Time to take a chance on someone else. Damn, I wish DeFazio would run for governor.

Nice takedown of Saltzman, though. That's the kind of forceful, ideologically informed argument that makes the Mercury endorsements generally superior to the other weekly's.

Mikey needs to set down the Koolaid and get a clue. I think the dart-throwing comment was a pretty good way to express gratitude for a very qualified field of candidates.

It's not like Karol needs any more fawning after the Oregonian endorsement, and the reasons Mikey lists (Jeff Cogen's accomplishments....Karol was a staffer) don't depict leadership skills, tested judgment, or even real experience. Those accomplishments are fluff, and with the county staring down a massive budget shortfall, a photo op at a farmers market won't get us very far.
18
Good choice on endorsing Bob Stacey for Metro President. He is the best qualified candidate.
20
Augh! I really am a LAME and I want just a CHECK LIST!! I don't have time to read through and I DO TRUST YOU GUYS! But just the first category: US Senator, who the hell am I voting for? Wyden, when you slammed him? And who's this other guy that sounds cool, although Republican, his name isn't on ballot. I'm trying to do the right thing here...
Love ya'
21
Please don't kick me in the dick, Matt Davis. I voted.
22
Thank Gawd I'm not a 'druggie' (I feel like I'm in Middle School again using that word)
...now...tell me how to vote Hip Weekly Alt Newspaper! I can't possibly do it without you!
23
Its not your vote that counts.....its who's counting the votes!!!!! Lots of luck ever getting the leadership you truly need.

Please wait...
