C'mon now- how can't we like a police chief named "Outlaw." It looks like Mayor Wheeler made an excellent choice. I understand that the process wasn't very public, but it looks like the results of the process were good. Honestly, if the process was public, the usual cop haters would have disrupted it the way they disrupt city council meetings. We would have no one applying for the job. Failed mayoral candidates can whine all they want, but we actually do need to create a decent working situation for the PPB. Right now, Portland is an undesirable city to be a cop. My joke about Ms. Outlaw is that she must be certifiably insane to want to be a police chief in this town.

Yep, you nailed it. Public input is one thing. A group of folks who know nothing about governing making impossible demands and then throwing childish tantrums to shut everything down when they don't get 100% of what they want is another thing. Chloe Eudaly seems to have learned that effective governing is a lot tougher than activism. I'm optimistic that this new hire will at least move things in the right direction while making it clear she is not simply going to cave in to activist demands just because they are loud.
