I love how the Mercury is always at the ready when someone cries racism. Instead of a Bat symbol, they have this big PC symbol that goes off and the "reporters" grab their pens ready to crucify any and all accused, evidence be damned.

As a Mexican-American (That's right, I don't use "hispanic") I know what racism is and this ain't it. The "victims" seem like very delicate flowers who are easily offended. Get over it.

I don't see what ethnicity has to do with it. And I'm really not trying to be an asshole here either. To me, it sounds like the guy who threw the beer was pissed by the actions of two other people. And I do believe the guy who operates in that road-rage manner would have thrown the beer regardless of who is sitting there, or their ethnicity. You could debate all day over who was more moral or right in the situation but honestly both parties sound like dicks.

I read the Facebook post that Rashida wrote, and it struck me as lacking context. It hopped quickly from "some asshole threw beer at me" to "the Laurelhurst supports white supremacy!"
So that sounds like bullshit, and even more so now that I actually have some context.

I thought that common place-saving rules require that personal items be left upon every seat to be saved: hats, beers, sweaters, library books, harmonicas, etc. I also thought that throwing beers on other patrons is grounds for being asked to leave a business establishment.

welcome to New Portland.

7

If you think hotheads OR racists are a recent development in this place, you're the "New Portland" element of the equation.

8

Can we stop calling the police in when dipshits can't decide who gets the seat? Or who is allowed to sell water where? Or where we can or can't have BBQ's?

9

This is absurd. The couple seems to be reaching pretty far here, completely grasping at straws. That's fine...it would just be another over-reactionary FB post. The worst part of the situation is the Mercury giving this print space.

Per posting on FB, Laurelhurst is "working with a social justice mediator" and will be doing "inherent bias training". Super disappointed to see this business paying protection to the local woke extortion racket.

Yeah, the Mercury has a race problem. Whenever they write about it, they tend to have the most childish, simplistic and generally underinformed take on whatever the details are. On the few occasions that they note that all their readers think they're being simps, they just fire the writer.

Steve Humphrey needs emails written to him about this, since he's never seemed to own up to it otherwise.

Now everyone above me on this thread can go over to the Laurelhurst's FB page and read their apology. They admit it was racial bias, they admit they were at fault and they are moving forward with implicit-bias training.

Interesting how the root of this problem was white men not believing a black woman and that's exactly what everyone here is doing. My advise to folks above me, do better. You are the problem.
