This reminds me of a gay bar in the Bay Area that was a block away from a predominantly black bar (one considered kind of scary to us whiteys). The gay bar had its share of black gays, but every so often one of the straight "scary" blacks from the other bar would come in. Well, the people running the bar couldn't bring themselves to tell him he wasn't welcome. Instead, the doorman would signal the DJ, who would turn off the disco/hiphop/dance music and instead turned on the country western. Usually the newcomer couldn't stand it for more than 10 or 15 minutes before he fled the bar.

I distinctly remember at least one gang-related shooting at a club downtown during a hip-hop show circa 2006.
Great reporting. Thank you.
Great article.
