Original story August 5, 3:58 pm:

One daytime cooling center will open in downtown Portland Sunday as the region braces for a brief surge in temperature.

The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory Friday for Multnomah County starting at noon on Sunday and ending Monday at 8 pm. The heat is expected to peak around 101 degrees on August 7 with an overnight low around 66 degrees—cooler than the average overnight low during the historic seven-day heat wave at the end of July.

In response, the county and city will open at least one cooling center in Old Town. The center is intended to serve people who would have normally sought refuge from the heat at the Central Library in downtown Portland, which closed to the public on August 1 due to planned construction. In addition, the Midland and Gresham library locations will extend their hours Sunday to help people stay out of the heat.

Additional cooling shelters may be announced later if conditions change. Last week, regional officials opened four, 24-hour cooling shelters for six days during the historic heat wave.

The most up to date information about cooling resources can be found on the county's website.
