Corrupt KJs, Endless Waits, and Poor Song Selection: Let’s Make Karaoke Fun Again

Spot 79 has the best karaoke in the entire universe. Killer Karaoke is Portland's best kept secret. On 79th and Foster. Hands down. And there is a pirate & wench karaoke costume contest this weekend and I'm gonna win $400 worth of real black pearls.

Interesting article - too bad the main focus (until the very end) seemed to be on a single establishment. You may not be aware of neezer.com for karaoke club/bar listings in the Pacific Northwest or karaokeinformer.com, an online magazine for the metropolitan Portland, Oregon area. These websites may help expand your next club/bar selection.

My wife likes to do karaoke and when we go out she has never had a problem getting a chance to sing a song.

Perhaps it helps that she's cute and tends to dress up to look sexy when she wants to sing.

Interestingly her song selections tend to have very repetitive lyrics, and long musical interludes she enjoys filling with "physical movement".

She has fun, I have fun and I assume that any others guys watching will enjoy that view too.

Oh and yes she can sing, that helps too!

I completely agree with the article.... I just went to the Alibi last night and waited almost 2 hours, never got to sing. The gypsy is the same way, if you plan on singing then be there by 10:30 at the latest and put your request in. The problem is at the Alibi, there were the same people going up, and the rest of us just sank deeper into our Mai Tai concoction that promotes fantasy singing urge! What the heck!

Another really great place to go that hardly anyone knows about is the Candlelight Restaurant & Lounge on NE 74th and Glisan (7334 NE Glisan). The KJ Gemini is tons of fun, and very nice, she does not take "bribes" or show favoritism. She even has a handout entitled "Equal Opportunity Karaoke" which explains how her rotation is arranged and what is acceptable and not acceptable. No guesswork at the Candlelight. New singers don't have to wait for the whole bar to sing twice before they get to sing. The drinks are stellar, the song selection is pretty good, and Thursday nights they're doing a karaoke game night featuring different fun karaoke games and contests. Seriously, you all need to go check this place out!! They take reservations for large parties for free, so take all 40 of your friends and have fun!! Screw Alibi, Chopsticks, Farmhouse, and all those rude bars, go to the Candlelight where you'll be greeted with a smile and treated with respect!

i miss portland so much, i don't remember having a hard time singing at chopsticks, but its been awhile. been living in Tucson, for a while and just came home from a bar with what they call 'cutthroat karaoke' supssedly if the crowd boos enough the bartenders will hit a large gong and your song is cut off. however the crowd never booed and i was gonged all four times i went up to sing, and i'm pretty sure, I'm not that bad. so that SUCKS, i think i'd much rather just not get called up, than walk outta there thinking the little hot young cunts tending the bar deserve a mouthfull of my fist.

Please wait...
