I hope the new soccer stadium employs at least a few of the needy, mentally ill, and homeless the city cut funding for.
Cut off the mentally ill, close down Hooper detox, close down the shelters, food banks, close down public schools, etc. What gives?
Hey why don't we build a 12 lane bridge to make it easier for the residents of Washington to commute to Portland while were at it?!
I love soccer.
Now is not the right time to build a stadium!!!
I still love soccer.
Dude, Matt your an uniformed piece of journalistic dogshite. Someone should give you some crayons and let you go back to marking up the walls in honeypots. Your an absolute moron.... The Mercury is now resorted to employing chimps to put out editorials.
Matt. From one Englishman to another your a tosser!
WTF has your 30yr old friend in England know about MLS? I have frozen waiting at bus stops going to school in London. Don't make me an expert on busses.
As the saying goes. Opinions are like butt holes.
We all have em. I hung around British in Portland for the past 16 years and most are the same. Talk about how everything English is better than American. Football, TV, Beer, Education...You know how it goes.
But they all stay. LOL. I dare you come to a Timbers game and sing the US National Anthem with me. Oh, that's right. tThats another thing the English put down about the USA too!
Just suck it up that you were on the wrong horse and go back to reporting about something that matters...like perhaps the Police abuse and negligence that goes on here...you know...the stuff you're good at reporting. You pity party piss pants oh poo my side lost and now I'm bitter act is really getting old.
But anyway, Beckham went to AC Milan because Fabio Capelli wanted him in Europe if he was going to get more caps for the national team. If the MLS sucks so much and it's prospects are so terrible then why is Beckham going to buy a team in the MLS?
Jesus, Matt, you make me embarrassed to have a Journalism degree. The Timbers Army didn't sing "Tally Ho." You got that piece of information by reading a different idiot's uninformed article. And you were at the press conference, weren't you? Are you that lazy? Did you shut off your ears while you were there?
Wow Matt! Looks like some people are starting to dislike you.
Good job! That is the sign of a true, muckraker and investigative journalist. The city's budget is a joke! If the Timbers are that good(they're pretty good). They can wait until we see if we can get our heads above water before throwing away our tax money.
I wouldn't say it's the sign of a true investigative reporter. How many barriers did the MLS proposal have to pass? How many votes involving different areas of the community? It passed them all, so to me that shows a majority decision to accept the MLS here. Perhaps Matt's argument is against democracy itself?
"The City of Portland is currently subsidizing the wages paid to stadium workers for Mr. Paulson's Beavers baseball team, at a cost of $150,000/year, to bring the pay up to fair wage standards."
Matt is right. The soccer project is stupid and I invite you all to read the Pdx Tribune today if you want to understand why it isn't going to come to fruition anyway.

I love how the trolls bring this up as if it's some sort of deal breaker. They'll still go eat at Wendy's or McDonald's or shop at Fred Meyer but they don't insist on living wages there. There is a place to address the fair wage issue. It's in Salem and has nothing to do with this.

@Blabby
That is perhaps one of the stupidest things I've ever seen you write. It's right up there with Wurster defending going before city council dressed in a hoodie.
My favorite part about all of this is the way Matt's writing has gone from remotely objective to, "I'm crying and I'm taking my ball and going home so screw all you guys." Then he calls his mate in England who knows shit about anything over here and uses him as some sort of authority on something he knows nothing about. Good work Matt...way to really dig into a story.
Matt Davis claiming some kind of moral outrage over the Portland Timbers is like McDonald's pointing at Hershey's and shouting, "Hey! Stop making our kids fat!" Wasn't it just two weeks ago that the Mercury was asking the greater Portland area, "When was the last time you were bagpiped?" Matt's fake outrage is enough to make anyone sick. Still.
Meanwhile, we're all REALLY impressed that you have a best mate from England. Really. Goodness, if only the rest of us could be so lucky. I have a mate from England too, but damn if I only get card from him around Christmas and then go a year without hearing from him. What, they don't have phones in England? Or Skype?
The point is, how exactly is the insight of your one "friend" (yes, we call them "friends" here, Matt, not "mates") from the old country newsworthy? "Newsflash! Englishman thinks American soccer sucks! No word yet about what he thinks of our accent."
Did you ask him about our beer, too? Does he think the Double Mountain Hop Lava is too hoppy? How about the fish and chips at Halibut's? Does he approve of their authenticity? Does our current president even come close to comparing to the greatness of Churchill? Help me, Matt, I need your English friend's approval before I eat my cucumber sandwiches and drink my fucking Earl Grey!
You guys get really defensive over this stuff. It's okay, Garrett.
Dinger, there really wasn't much public process. They worked out a deal behind closed doors and then the council voted on it. If the process had been so thorough why was the deal a surprise to Lents, the Blazers, the County, the school district, three members of the Council. Who am I forgetting?
The ad hominems being slung by soccer fanatics just proves how little water their scam, er, "proposal" holds. Rather than putting forth rational arguments backed by real numbers, all you people can offer is vitriol against anyone who dares questions the Adams-Leonard plan to write a blank check to some rich brat with a toy team. Astounding. Matt, thanks for your reportage on this issue. This is a boondoggle of epic proportions, and it's pretty damn clear that taxpayers will be left holding the bag in the not-too-distant future.
So when your wife builds an unnecessary stadium in Eugene, it is fine and dandy, but when a viable opportunity for cultural and economic growth is expanded upon in the "Portland region" you refer to, it is wrong? Please explain, thousands of Portlanders are dying to hear your actual, factual reasons, instead of the above B.S.

Let me remind everyone what Matt used to think about the Timbers from his own fingertips on the Mercury's very own blog.

In this context you should have gone with "you're" instead of "your." Also, the chimp analogy is more than a little outdated and tiresome.
Thanks for playing!
Sincerely,
You're an Asshole

Keep it up Matt!
Nice scarves Timbers Army!
Um, what process were you watching?
No research was done, thanks Blabby. I believe you morons say "Fail" at this point.
