Stay up to date on Portland news and politics. Looking for fun? Here are the best Things to Do in Portland today.
HAPPY IMPEACHMENT DAY, PORTLAND! Or, more accurately, happy beginning of a potential impeachment in one chamber of Congress day! Today's scheduled impeachment vote in the House is, unsurprisingly, already being made worse by GOP representatives who know they don't have the votes to stop it. Expect a handful of procedural delays and rambling speeches by Republican members of the House today. The New York Times estimates the official vote will place between 6:30 pm and 7:30 pm EST (that's 3:30 and 4:30 for us). Follow the day's proceedings live here.
P.S. I Hate You: Donald Trump set the tone for today's vote yesterday by penning a scattered, accusatory letter to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. It's filled with conspiracy theories, exaggerations, and all-out lies. The NYT's graciously annotated the letter to point them out.
Incorrect Snooping: The US Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court has ordered the government to explain how it will guarantee the FBI won't mislead judges when applying for wiretap orders like it did in 2016.
Wow, so there’s actually a shit ton of people at this #ImpeachmentEve protest in the freezing cold on the Portland Waterfront. #ImpeachAndRemove #NotAboveTheLaw pic.twitter.com/403ZECuglS

Doin' Time: Rick Gates, the former Trump aide who provided critical evidence to take down Trump pals Paul Manafort and Roger Stone, has been sentenced to 45 days in prison. Despite his previous cooperation with the court, a judge ruled that Gates' crimes of money laundering and lying to federal prosecutors still called for time behind bars.
Oakland's Refugee Camp: Peep this stunning photo/audio essay by NYT reporters who spent three months in the Bay Area's largest homeless encampment. (YES I realize I am relying heavily on the NYT this morning—but for good reason.)
Excuse Me, What: The feds have won a court battle that grants them all the proceeds from Edward Snowden's (very good) autobiography, since it relies on government secrets. JESUS, GET OVER IT, FEDS.
Seeing so many snide tweets about this. If the man has anxiety or a phobia then let him do whatever he needs to do. Being a famous actor doesn’t mean you don’t have mental health needs just like everyone else. He wasn’t rude to anyone, he was just anxious. https://t.co/b6xx864bQF

Lane Change: After hearing outcry from local and state leaders, an Oregon transportation oversight committee has delayed a vote on whether to widen I-5 through the Rose Quarter. The Mercury's Blair Stenvick has the lowdown.
Antifa in the Centerfold: That's right, Portland's everyday anti-fascists are featured in this month's Playboy !
Catching Up: A man has been arrested for alleged hate crimes committed in Portland nearly two years ago.
Clean Sweep: This morning, Portland City Council will vote on renewing the city contract for a program that routinely cleans up—and displaces—homeless encampments. Earlier this month, the Mercury spoke with homeless Portlanders about the system's debilitating flaws.
