Local credit unions provide neither the attractive interest rates nor convenience (deposit checks from your phone!) that online banks do. If I ever need a loan I'll go with a credit union, but at the mediocre rates *any* brick and mortar bank is offering, I'll stick with online banks.

That being said, BankSimple is based in the Pearl district, and I'll definitely check them out when they finally open for business.

I did look into stashing my emergency fund in local government bonds; not only is it "local" but any returns are exempt from local and federal taxes. It's a huge hassle though, and the administration costs overshadow the benefits.

If I lived in California or Washington I could do it for free :(

I would like to see more of the local credit unions take this opportunity to expand their capacity so that some of the larger public institutions like the City's $900,000 Million in assets be able to be administered through local institutions. Maybe if we had a state bank or similar institution we could keep the Wall Street banks from profiting off of the public's tax revenue.

Hey, Frank, I was referring to the statement by Commander Day regarding marchers being required to stay on the sidewalk and not take to the streets.

Point of fact - local streets are PUBLIC streets and their use is not just limited to people who own and operate motor vehicles.

Point of policy - the police are supposed to protect public safety, and not just the free flow of traffic; when they become overly concerned with the latter it means they have their priorities all mixed up.

But I guess that's what happens when PPB puts the Traffic Division in charge of crowd control. I've seen the Traffic Division officers in action at antiwar demonstrations and critical mass rides in the early 00s, and most of the Traffic Division cops would like nothing better than to deploy pepper spray and police brutality tactics on peaceful protesters, simply because they took to the streets and blocked a bit of motor vehicle traffic.

Geez Randy, c'mon man...the streets are built for vehicles, and the sidewalks are bulit for pedestrians.
Both are public - of course! - but the rest of the public also has a right to those streets- and their numbers are far greater than yours.
The cops have been uncommonly cool with 'occupy'.
Work with them - and the rest of the public - and your message will come across better and win you respect in the media.
Coming across as thugs don't help your cause.

Frank - you need to do a bit more research on the concept of streets as public space. The public streets were co-opted by motorists with the support of car manufacturers back in the 1920s and 1930s, and there nothing in the US Constitution giving priority to motorists over first amendment-protected protesters.

Streets existed way before motor vehicles did and they were not built expressly for motor vehicles; the first Good Roads movement in the US was in fact spearheaded at the turn of the last century by cyclists, before the rise of the hegemony of motor vehicles.

Hey, I'm just looking out for the 99% of Portlanders who wish to use the roads too, as opposed to the less-than-one percent who think they can only make their point by pissing the rest of us off.

I'd suggest learning some common sense, but maybe 'common' sense is rather rare and also unteachable.

People walking along the street have the same rights as people driving along the sidewalk. Both are equally public property...
