Portland shoppers have gotten spoiled. Take a look at recent history, and you'll see a much different town, one in which brilliant, creative people didn't open special stores brimming with personality every other week to showcase their favorite treasures and make them available to you in meaningful ways. Now, of course, that happens all the time. But even just five short years ago when Justin Machus first threw open the doors of Local35 (3556 SE Hawthorne), it was a huge deal.

Now joined by a legion of indie boutiques across the city, Local35 has grown, matured, and expanded over the past five years, remaining a favorite stop on Hawthorne for streetwear for both men and women that includes favorite imports (most notably from Sweden, as one of the first in town to carry WeSC, Nudie, and Cheap Monday) as well as a host for monthly art shows and parties. This week the store celebrates its fifth birthday with a party not to be missed: Members of the WeSC team are flying out from the land of lutefisk, DJ Beyonda will be on the decks, new work from the artist Alex Steckly will be on the walls, Voodoo Doughnuts will be devoured, and there will be enough liquor poured out to warrant a first-ever requirement for the store to check IDs at one of their events. Never fear, kiddos: You can still drop by all weekend long for the anniversary sale, with tons of gear marked down to half off, plus check out the newest holiday collections and stylish odds and ends like headphones and rare-edition New Balance kicks. (Anniversary party, Thurs Nov 20, 7-10 pm, sale through Sun)

Also on the calendar this week is the latest Seaplane pop-up store (2266 NW Lovejoy—new location!), this week featuring CLF by Claire La Faye and Demimonde Jewelry, two designers whose romantic pieces are well suited for the upcoming holidays as either gifts or party wear. (Fri Nov 21, 7-10 pm) While you're in the neighborhood, stop by Lizard Lounge (1323 NW Irving) for the re-launch of Nau, the Portland-based active wear-with-a-conscience line we almost lost when its first incarnation ceased operations before being picked up by Horny Toad. Celebrate the return with a perusal of the goods and a performance from Pictures and Sound. (Fri Nov 21, 7 pm, RSVP to launch@nau.com)

Also going down this weekend is the annual Explode la Mode fashion show and p:ear benefit, featuring an exciting cast of up-and-coming designers including Erhart and Paperdoll Fashion. (p:ear Loft, 338 NW 6th, Sat Nov 22, 9 pm, $5)
