Last week, we wrote about the Academy of Character and Ethics, an alternative public school that Mt. Olivet Baptist Church was backing. The church was even referring to the school as one of the church's ministries, on the church's website.

Basic Rights Oregon—concerned about the church's past contributions to the anti-gay Measure 36 campaign—and many public school parents were outraged that a church was pushing for a public school. They've been putting pressure on the school district and the church to clearly separate church and state.

Today, it looks like that pressure worked. Mt. Olivet's Rev. James Martin sent a letter to Portland Public Schools Superintendent Vicki Phillips, pulling the ACE concept out of the public school district. "The Academy of Character and Ethics has decided to pursue other venues for implementing its school," Martin wrote.
