Mark Kurlansky, reading at Powell's City of Books, 1005 W Burnside, Mon March 27, 7:30 pm

Food historian Mark Kurlansky, the author of bestsellers Salt and Cod, presents The Big Oyster: History on the Half Shell, a history of New York City filtered through the narrow lens of our rubbery aphrodisiac shellfish friends. Starting with the discovery of oyster beds by the Lanape Indians and following oysters' massive popularity with both NYC's rich and poor, Kurlansky also provides plenty of oyster recipes, for those who like to eat as well as read. Dinner at My House for Our House, Sat March 25, 7 pm, 736-9276, call for reservations and directions

Our House is a nonprofit that offers health and housing services for people with HIV and AIDS. Every year, the organization invites locals to host dinners at their house, with guest chefs preparing the meal. This weekend's meal at Rex and Kathryn Lindaman's house, titled "Martini Madness," is the last of the 2005/2006 dinner season (call the number if you're interested in hosting or cooking a meal for 2006/2007) and has a vodka libations/pool tournament theme. You'll get drunk, eat gourmet tidbits, and play pool (for prizes) in a fancy Westside home, with the proceeds of your dinner ticket going to a great charity. Life could be worse. JWS
