Opening This Week

* Carver Country
Portland Arts & Lectures presents one of its Literature in Performance events that sounds pretty intriguing: the short stories of Raymond Carver given staged readings by trained actors. The works performed are Why Honey?, Cathedral, and the seminal What We Talk About When We Talk About Love. Mind you, these are not plays, but performances of the actual stories themselves. Theater! Theatre!, 3430 SE Belmont, 227-2583, Thurs-Sat 8 pm, Sun 7 pm, through July 25, $24

Glengarry Glen Ross
Real estate brokers make for high drama, but the performers should be convincing. In Glengarry Glen Ross, Cygnet's actors make a good go of it, but the rapid-fire dialogue gets tripped over, robbing the show of precious momentum. Cygnet Theatre, 403 NW 5th, the Magdelyn space, 493-4077, Thurs-Sat 8 pm, Sun 5 pm, through July 18, $12-15
