Princess Nokia, Suzi Analogue, Karma Rivera
New York-based Boricua rapper Princess Nokia’s studio debut 1992 Deluxe is beyond impressive: With her malleable flows and tones, Nokia’s gritty hip-hop is made refreshing by its progressive, empowering lyrics. Identifying as a bi-sexual “Tomboy,” skater, and feminist, Nokia melds her influences of gothic punk and hip-hop while honoring her Afro-Latina heritage and celebrating femmes of color. On YouTube, her highlights include various insightful Q&As, footage from her visceral live shows, and an endless stream of visuals that’ll turn you into an instant Stan. JENNI MOORE

The Album Leaf, VĂĄkoum
San Diego musician Jimmy LaValle began his career in SoCal hardcore bands like the Locust and Swing Kids, but changed course with his quiet, ambient, post-rock solo project the Album Leaf. Using a Rhodes piano and synthesizer, LaValle creates moody soundscapes in the same vein as Mogwai and Explosions in the Sky. In 2016, he released his sixth studio album, Between Waves—a collision of instrumental Krautrock and synth-pop that proves that even after almost 20 years, the Album Leaf can still experiment.

Willy Vlautin
Willy Vlautin made his mark with the superlative Portland band Richmond Fontaine, and their lonesome tales of hard luck and desolation in the American West. Vlautin’s brought his keen, humane eye for storytelling to a small shelf’s worth of just-as-wonderful novels—including Lean on Pete, which has been adapted into a devastating, marvelous film coming out this spring. Tonight Vlautin reads from his brand-new book Don’t Skip Out on Me, which also features a soundtrack by Richmond Fontaine. NED LANNAMANN
