Bullshit trade. Doubling down on being terrible.

Hmm. Let's see, an injury-prone 35 year-old for a healthy 31 year-old and the most solid player on your team. Oh, and the captain. And the gap between Perkins and anyone who could potentially fill the roll of captain is infinite.

I hope they realize if Gavin's back next year some people will stop coming to games.

good move. Gleason's not far away from having the experience/skills to be the #1, and Ricketts will be a great role model.

plus, Perkins was a GOOD keeper, not great. he was something like the 2nd or 3rd highest paid player on the team. he also liked to kick the ball out of bounds for no discernible reason. we need to move the ball out of the back and not constantly play the long lottery balls that Perkins seemed to prefer. I'm also curious to find out if there were some issues with communication between him and the backline. a top keeper should also organize the entire defense. not sure if that was a forte of Perkin's.

the real question will be what happens to the extra salary capacity, assuming that Ricketts is not on the same wages.

Gavin definitely needs to get the ax too, just to be clear.
5
Timbers be trollin' us, y'all.

EC,
You boot the ball away that often when you don't trust your back line. When he did distribute to them, the ball would inevitably end up back on his feet (to be booted away) because the back line had no idea how to press forward effectively.

Who knows. Maybe Ricketts will be solid. Poor Perkins never had a chance to show he could be great rather than good. I'm actually happy for him. He'll get a shot with a better team that can defend and score with more consistency. And the dude will be around the league until his late 30's, I'm guessing. At some point the Timbers need to add not subtract more players like him.

TSW - I hear you, but am not sold. I saw Perkins send it long time and again when there were obvious outlets short. that and the three or four times a game that he sailed it straight out. don't get me wrong, I like Perkins and truly wish him the best. I just don't think he was good value for the money.

I don't know his salary situation. Was it that big? If so, it does make more sense to dump it. But what of Boyd? Dude's the worst bang for the buck on the team if that's the criteria.
I also wonder if Perkins candor about the quality of the team got under MP's skin. Dick move if Perkins got shipped for personal reasons.

As for Perkins' long boots, remember that damn field is the smallest in the league. Too hard to avoid out of bounds kicks. Time to make that field bigger, too, by the way.

Perkins was the highest paid last year, but now is (was) #2 for base salary (http://portland.globalfootballtoday.com/20…). field size duly noted.

I'm giving Boyd until the end of the season before turning on him. he really needs to play with someone else up front, not as a lone forward. hoping to see some sort of Boyd/Mwanga magic someday.

EC,
Any word how/why Montreal justifies getting rid of Ricketts?

@EC AND TSW: WHAT'S THIS TALK ABOUT FIELD SIZE? I THOUGHT ALL FOOTBALL PITCHES WERE THE SAME SIZE.

Please wait...
