they ran past the stairs to climb the fence and couldn't get over it getting trapped in the process

If this were really the end of the world, there would be a LOT more meaningless sex... A lot... It would be a logical pastime.

NOPE! Put yourself in that situation. Running down a blind alley, would you climb a fence or stairs? (Can zombies even climb stairs?) Anyway, doesn't matter, the stairs weren't there to begin with.
