Throw it All Away on Love
Austin artist Andy Coolquitt is known throughout Texas for his home, which is also sort of his art. His East Austin studio is an immersive funk environment, or an incredibly wild party space. Although the space, which has its roots in a whole tradition of Texas folk art spaces, is Coolquitt's life work, he is also an accomplished studio artist. Coolquitt will be in residency through May 19, gathering materials and constructing an environment at Savage. Visitors are welcome to visit the work in progress, or lay low until the big party at the end of the month. Savage Art Resources , 1430 SE Third Ave, 230-0265, May 6-28

Joe Thurston
Thurston, he of the painted people who look constructed of spaghetti, debuts a new set of canvases this month. What separates these paintings from previous efforts are the backgrounds-Thurston has become looser, more painterly, and more atmospheric, which pops the cartoony figures into startling focus. Mark Woolley Gallery , 120 NW 9th Suite 210, 224-5475, Through May 28
