Alberta Art Hop
Now in its seventh year, the Alberta Art Hop's serving up all sorts of predictable family- and neighborhood-friendly stuff. Hit artonalberta.org for the full rundown. Alberta Art Hop, NE Alberta from 14th-23rd, Sat 11 am-8 pm, Sun 11 am-6 pm

Compound Concoction
Guestroom, the gallery who invites a different curator to create each exhibition, has called upon Katsu Tanaka of Just Be Design for this exhibition of Japanese and US artists. Like all group shows, some works will grab you more than others, but Yugo Fujita and ZanPon's drawings struck me as pretty fantastic. Guestroom, 128 NE Russell, through May 27

Fresh
The curse of large-scale group shows is that they tend to be unwieldy and less than focused. Stuffed to the gills with new work from 15 artists, from local Leach Gallery staples to a few out-of-towners, FRESH is no exception. But there's enough compelling work here—particularly from young, up-and-coming Portlanders—to help you forgive the show's lack of coherence. (JM) Elizabeth Leach Gallery, 417 NW 9th, 224-0521, through May 27

Jock Sturges
I was about to write a brand-new blurb about Jock Sturges, but I realize that what I wrote about him two years ago still fits the bill: "Sturges once had potential to be a relevant artist—his earliest work fused classical nude photography with a curiosity about budding teenage sexuality, but now he seems satisfied with highly crafted nudes of mostly underage girls in a high-kitsch style." Butters Gallery, 520 NW Davis, 248-9378, through May 27
