Why? Because I like Spider-Man and I get to blog on this blog. That’s why.

SPIDER ITEM! The guy who directed Chronicle is in talks to do a Venom movie. So that will probably be terrible.

SPIDER ITEM! This is one of the better things I’ve read about why Spider-Man is the best superhero. (He is. THERE IS NO DEBATE ON THIS MATTER.) I don’t even care for Reign, Kaare Andrews’ Spidey-as-Batman comic that David Brothers examines, but Brothers’ piece on the book, and on Peter Parker in general, gets right to the core of why Stan Lee and Steve Ditko’s 50-year-old teenager is still the best. (AGAIN: NO DEBATE ON THIS MATTER.)

SPIDER ITEM! There’s a new issue of Ultimate Comics Spider-Man out today, written by Brian Michael Bendis with art by Sara Pichelli. You should read it! It’s up in my top four favorite comics right now, actually, along with Prophet (written by Brandon Graham, art by Simon Roy), Wolverine and the X-Men (written by Jason Aaron, art by various artists), and Adventure Time (written by Dinosaur Comics‘ Ryan North, art by Shelli Paroline and Braden Lamb). Actually, you should read all of those comics I just mentioned. It’s cool, you can thank me later.

DEPT. OF CORRECTIONS! Since Monday, I have been informed by numerous nerds that I was “cranky,” “whiny,” and “a real grump” about that stupid Spider-Man nail polish. I will not apologize.

With honor and distinction, Erik Henriksen served as the executive editor of the Portland Mercury from 2004 to 2020. He can now be found at henriksenactual.com.

  1. THIS IS EASILY THE STUPIDET THING ERIK HENRIKSEN HAS EVER WRITTEN. SPIDER-MAN IS NOT IN ANY WAY THE BEST SUPER-HERO. FUCK, HE’S BARELY ABLE TO CRACK THE TOP 20 LIST. THE BEST SUPER-HERO IS OBVIOUSLY AXE COP. AFTER THAT, NUMBER TWO MIGHT BE HOWARD THE DUCK (FROM THE COMICS, NOT THAT AWFUL LUCAS MOVIE).

  2. Ditko’s arc, culminating in #33, is definitely one of my favorites of all time. I’m unsure why I felt compelled to share this. In conclusion: Spider-Man!
