On this, the last day of illegal pot in Oregon, take a moment to consider the medical marijuana dispensaries that have been shooting from the ground all around town. The state’s dispensary program began in March of last year, and already Oregon (maybe) has more medical pot shops than Starbucks, according to the O. That’ll probably prove useful to non-medical consumers, since the legislature appears ready to allow pot purchases from medical shops in October.

One thing the legislature won’t do? Meaningfully consider the minimum wage. That’s an outcome House Speaker Tina Kotek probably could have seen coming a mile away when she grandly announced a package that would raise Oregon’s minimum to $13 deep, deep into the session. Stay tuned for a ballot measure.

The left lanes of this great state’s highways are for passing only! It seems that’s about to be the case, anyway.

Independence Day is Saturday! You’ve never listened to Oregon’s proscriptions against good fireworks, but maybe listen to the looming ban on any fireworks whatsoever. These are dry times.

Eugene’s Civic Stadium can testify to that last bit. The historic structure went up spectacularly yesterday, prompting widespread lamentation.

The city prevails in a wonky court challenge over how it can invest urban renewal money in Portland State University projects. Upshot: More of your tax dollars can flow to PSU!

The Washington Post has been doing its damnedest to track fatal police shootings this year. So far, the paper’s found 461 of them, and that list is very up to date. It even includes the death of Alan Lee Bellew, who Portland police shot to death in a East Portland parking lot Sunday night, after he allegedly pulled a starter pistol. Something that’ll come as no surprise: Roughly a quarter of those killed were in apparent mental health crisis, a fact the Post links to insufficient training.

Will Greece pay the $1.8 billion it owes by today’s deadline, or are the world’s financial markets screwed again? We don’t have long to find out!

Here’s a weird and fascinating story about how the US Chamber of Commerce fights antismoking efforts in any and every corner of the world. Way to bolster the already sterling reputation of big business, US Chamber!

You probably qualify for overtime pay, under new rules President Obama just announced. Not that anyone actually gets the overtime pay they qualify for, but it’s nice to think about.

One man you won’t want to elect POTUS if you support legal weed (and for a bunch of other reasons besides): New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who’s about to formally toss his comically tiny bowler hat into the ring.

No relief in sight. Revel in it, I guess.

  1. They should decree the left lanes of this Great State for passing only.
I’m damned sick and tired of people seemingly falling asleep in the left lane oblivious of what happens around them.
In Germany, these assholes would be ticketed.
