Last Year, Jackrabbit chef Chris Diminno started a chef-y cycling group called Sack Lunch PDX to represent this city’s squad of the No Kid Hungry national Chefs Cycle group. Last year, they took pledges for some long rides and raised $70,000 to feed hungry kids around Oregon.
This year they’re hoping to raise just as much scratch for their planned three-day, 300-mile ride in Santa Rosa, California, from May 15 to 17.
But they’re hoping you can help them on that ride by swinging by Lardo on SE Hawthorne on Saturday, May 5 for “Dog Fight,” a corn dog battle that will pit Diminno against other Portland chefs like Lardo’s Rick Gencarelli, Bollywood Theater’s Troy McLarty, Gado Gado and Han Oak’s Thomas Pisha-Duffy, and Banana Wonder’s Anna Abatzoglou, who’s making the event’s sole vegan dog.
Abatzoglou says the event was born from past rides, which always involve pit stops at indie minimarts to refuel on corn dogs. In fact, she says, Pisha-Duffy’s so fond of the proteiny junk food that the cycling group has nicknamed him after his favorite snack.
Dog Fight starts at noon at Lardo at 1212 SE Hawthorne. Tickets are $25 and entitles attendees to eight corn dog bites and two pints of beer, courtesy of Rogue Brewing. Proceed’s will go directly to the Sack Lunch PDX cycling team as it prepares for its California ride. If you can’t make it or think that corn dogs are trash food, you can still make a donation to feed kids via the group’s webpage.
