A happy hour event for people of color has left a North Portland restaurant drowning in hateful, threatening messages from across the countryโand now the local business community is hesitant to support the monthly meetup.
Since December 2017, Backyard Social, a restaurant on North Killingsworth, has dedicated one Monday a month to spotlighting a local nonprofit, donating 10 percent of that dayโs profits to featured organizations, which have included the ACLU and Planned Parenthood. In May, that nonprofit was Brown Hope, a newly founded racial justice group overseen by Portland activist Cameron Whitten.
Whitten used the opportunity to host Brown Hopeโs first โReparations Happy Hour,โ where people of color were invited to meet at Backyard Social to discuss how local politics and policy are impacting their communities. Thanks to donations raised by Brown Hopeโs online fundraising, every attendee would be given $10 just for showing up.
In a majority white city, itโs a small step toward reparationsโthe idea that Americans descended from enslaved people are owed financial compensation from white America for centuries of injustices against them. Whittenโs goal is to have predominantly white donors contribute to the monthly event; on the day of the inaugural happy hour, a number of neighbors intentionally dined at Backyard Social to contribute. The event was split into two parts: One was a private meeting for the nearly 40 people of color who showed up, and the other was an open discussion with diners about Brown Hopeโs goals.
โIt went so smoothly,โ Whitten says. โWhich makes this all so surreal.โ
Heโs referring to the media firestorm that followed. A few days after the happy hour took place, national outlets caught wind of the event and published stories about the free money Whitten was doling out to people of color. Right-wing pundits began spinning it as โreverse racism,โ claiming that Brown Hope discriminated against white people. Whitten was interviewed by the New York Times and appeared on Fox News to defend the event. Online, alt-right groups immediately targeted Backyard Social, falsely accusing the restaurant of refusing to serve white people.
“White-owned businesses are now experiencing the kind of harassment that people of color have to face regularly.โ
Soon, people from across the US were showering the restaurantโs Yelp, Facebook, and Google pages with bad reviews, claiming they had been turned away for being white or criticizing the restaurantโs food, service, and cleanlinessโanything to negatively impact the business. Then the calls started rolling in.
โWhatโs your name?โ Latima Chambers, a co-owner of Backyard Social, recalls one caller asking her. When she didnโt give it, they responded, โThat doesnโt matter. I will Google your business and I will find you.โ The restaurant received so many threatening and hateful calls that Chambers filed a police reportโthen she unplugged the phone.
โWe didnโt see this coming at all. Itโs been very stressful and very scary,โ says Chambers. While the attacks havenโt escalated into any physical encounters, over the weekend the restaurant received a few pieces of threatening mail. One came with a penny taped to it, reading, โA diverse coin for your blackyard social.โ The return address? โThe Great Southern States.โ
Despite the hate mail, Chambers and her co-owners maintain their support of Brown Hope.
โIn this political climate, we need to have these conversations,โ she says. โThe worst thing to do is back down and hide.โ
Last week, Chambers met with John Blomgren, a co-owner of Back to Eden Bakery, the cafรฉ that was planning to host Reparations Happy Hour in June. Chambers encouraged him to host the event despite potential pushback. Back to Eden had already been receiving criticism, but not just for its connection to Brown Hope: Just a few weeks earlier, Back to Eden fired two white staff members for turning away a Black customer who entered the shop as it was closing. Blomgren has been criticized for the decision by both conservative groups and liberal racial justice advocates.
“The worst thing to do is back down and hide.โ
After getting new hate mail for planning to host Brown Hopeโs happy hour, Blomgren allegedly shared his concerns with Whitten. Whitten, who said he felt pressured by Blomgrenโs anxiety surrounding the event, decided to cancel the pending June meetup at Back to Eden. The bakery has since changed management, and neither Blomgren nor the cafรฉโs new CEO responded to the Mercuryโs requests for comment.
Whitten is sympathetic to these businessesโ fears triggered by mysterious threats and hate mail, especially since itโs familiar territory for him. Whitten is a longtime activist in the Portland communityโin 2012, he waged a 55-day hunger strike in front of City Hall to protest housing inequitiesโmaking him a regular target of vicious threats, both online and in person.
โI take harassment with a grain of salt,โ Whitten says. โI think the alt-right sees they canโt get to me, and so they focus on other areas.โ
But Whitten also believes the harassment of white-owned businesses like Backyard Social and Back to Eden may help white Portlanders truly understand the emotional and financial impacts that racism has on communities of color.
โItโs imperative to recognize that this is what racial justice work looks like,โ Whitten says. โThis is the reality. White-owned businesses are now experiencing the kind of harassment that people of color have to face regularly.โ
But it may make finding a business to host future Reparations Happy Hours more challenging. After dropping Back to Eden as a June venue, Whittenโs unsure what venues will host his polarizing event.
โIโm concerned about getting other businesses to sign on to work with us,โ Whitten says. โWe donโt know whatโs going to happen next. But weโre not quitting.โ

This was an utterly ridiculous event to start with, but this type of overreaction by a bunch of anonymous bullies to a small meaningless event is just plain ugly. Welcome to America under Trump I guess.
“Just a few weeks earlier, Back to Eden fired two white staff members for turning away a Black customer who entered the shop as it was closing.”
I believe the customer arrived at 9:06pm when the posted hours were until 9pm. I wouldn’t characterize 6 minutes after closing as “as it was closing.”
Death threats are shitty. Let the grifter get his grift on. Whitten is an expert in cashing in on liberal white guilt, more power to him. Anyone who would willingly sit next to a pile of instant mashed potatoes and customer complaint cards wrapped up with a bow tie (Tucker Carlson) deserves a free drink.
Agreed: the event itself is fairly meaningless, but I’m all for pissing off bullies.
That said…”Blomgren allegedly shared his concerns with Whitten. Whitten, who said he felt pressured by Blomgrenโs anxiety surrounding the event, decided to cancel the pending June meetup at Back to Eden.”
I can’t tell if this is bad writing -what exactly is “allegedly” doing in there?- or people who don’t communicate very well – Whitten “felt pressured by Blomgren’s anxiety”?- but this is becoming the shared experience of anyone who reads the Mercury these days.
The Mercury used to have much better journalistic integrity, not to mention a sense of humor. I moved to Portland in 2001 and used to love reading it all the way through. Mind you, that was back when the only people who deserved vicious mockery were the political right, as they pushed us humorlessly into pointless and immoral wars while trying to silence fact-based opposition. The Mercury skewered their pretensions with perfectly irreverent humor. How sad that this same publication is now gullible enough to swallow this idiotic identitarian narrative and present us with drivel no more plausible than the cheerleading for the War on Terror was. Mercury staff, grow a brain; and if you’ve already got one, grow a spine and use it.
“Blomgren allegedly shared his concerns with Whitten. Whitten, who said he felt pressured by Blomgrenโs anxiety surrounding the event, decided to cancel the pending June meetup at Back to Eden.”
I would say to fuck off with that incredible buck passing you accomplished right there, but passin’ bucks is what the event is all about, no? Eyyyyyy! Keeping it consistent!
Portland remains overwhelmingly white, dozens of decades after forming in a state that was founded as a white utopia. It’s so very white that this is the kind of news that goes viral, and because white supremacists who love the whiteness here treat it like their holy land.
It’s tough for white people to imagine getting ten tons of shit for doing things everyone else does without being noticed, but this is what happens to people of color in this town every single day. Pro tip: if what you do is what you’re noticed for, you’re probably white. If who you are is what you’re noticed for, you’re probably not. So if you’re a white person supporting advocacy and are considering quitting because it’s too hard, at least recognize that you have the choice to change something in order to quit being noticed. People of color don’t have that privilege, no matter how much hateful trash is aimed at them.
One doesn’t have to be alt-right to recognize that Whitten is an unabashed racist.
Every “defense” of him is just like this one… name calling and attempted demonization of others. At this point, I don’t even think Alex believes what he’s writing.
