As a good friend once advised me: When you go to New Orleans you should definitely try to catch the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, who honor the titular historic music venue in the French Quarter by continuing the city’s rich culture of traditional jazz. I was stupid and didn’t go see them during a visit to NOLA in May 2019, but lucky for me, they were announced as part of the Pickathon lineup and I got to see them in the unique setting of Pendarvis Farm.
Their 2019 set on the Mt. Hood stage was an invigorating, horn-heavy performance that got everyone on the feet, and forced me to look up from my plate of Ate-Oh-Ate Hawaiian food and pay attention. And I’m definitely not mad at this video of them performing “Mad” from their 2017 album So It Is on the late-night Starlight stage.
