Tonight’s the night!
The Bagdad will be airing every episode of Battlestar Galactica season 4.0, Fridays, free, 10 pm. Any thoughts on how busy this is going to be?
AND! Your friendly neighborhood nerds at the Tanker (4825 SE Hawthorne) will also be showing the episode—they have lots of TVs and much better drink options. Personally I think I’ll hit the Bagdad tonight and the Tanker for the rest of the season. The big screen will be nice, the McBeer, not so much. (I drank way too much warm Ruby out of paper coffee cups during the years I worked there… It’s basically the taste of anger as far as I’m concerned.)
Last night I finished up rewatching season 4.0, followed by the webisodes, which I will discuss after the jump because SOME of my coworkers still haven’t caught up and I don’t want to ruin the internet for them.
There’s obviously a dramatic need to reintroduce some human/Cylon conflict in 4.5—after all, in 4.0 they find Earth and make tentative pals with the Cylons. An episode after the true identities of Tigh, Anders, Tori, and Chief are revealed, no one seems particularly bothered. There’s barely even a reason to care who the final Cylon is, except to settle nerd-fights internet wide. SO, based on that last webisode, Gaeta is going to something to jeopardize the alliance. There are a few possibilities here: the Cylons really can’t be trusted, and Gaeta is right to sabotage the alliance; Gaeta is going to ruin things for everyone because he can’t accept his own culpability in the deaths of his loved ones and shipmates; Gaeta was not actually culpable in the deaths of his loved ones and shipmates, but he’s going to sabotage the alliance anyway because he believes the Cylons are fundamentally evil. The last one seems the most likely to me—the idea that Gaeta on some level knew the Eight was killing the other passengers on that ship, and wanted her to do it, strikes me as pretty bullshitty (and how lazy to introduce a duplicitous bisexual!). Equally, it seems a little psycho-babbly to suggest that Gaeta knew, or should have known, that the Eight was systematically slaughtering everyone he cared about on New Caprica. But even if he had no idea, it still doesn’t mean he’s right that the alliance is untenable: The Cylons did kill most of humanity, which is something everyone else has come to terms with. So! We’ll see tonight.
My BSG wish is for no more singing Gaeta.
And I stole this theory, with modifications, from Sojourn Theatre’s artistic director Michael Rohd: I think the final Cylon is Starbucks’ dad, making Starbuck half Cylon herself. (Michael thought her mom; I like dad better, since the identity of her father is one of the big unaddressed questions in the show.) That would explain the bad art and whatnot.

It’s Adama’s dead wife.
Or it’s the Galactica itself.
Or it’s Wall-E.
Or, and this is my personal favorite today, it’s my iPhone.
This would explain why I can’t for the life of me, turn the ringer off god damn it.
I need to start figuring out what time this evening to get off the Internet, since I refuse to see this with a crowd so won’t go out, don’t have cable so can’t watch at home, and so have to wait until tomorrow’s Hulu posting to see it. Heh.
Oh gawd… That means Tanker is going to be full of nerds tonight.
I found the webisodes to be kind of bewildering–though admittedly, that might have had to do with copious amounts of prescription cough medicine. (Not to mention the logic-clouding rage that boils inside of me whenever Gaeta starts whimpering and singing to himself.) All I’m hoping is that whether due to Gaeta’s actions or something else, the Cylons regain some sort of villain status–or at least feel like something of a threat–in 4.5.
With 4.0, there just wasn’t much reason to care: As soon as humans became bosom buddies with Cylons, most of the dramatic conflict of the show’s core premise disappeared, taking with it any reason to care about finding Earth or giving a shit about it’s fate. (Unless I’m missing something pretty big here, wasn’t the whole point of finding Earth to find some sort of refuge from the Cylons?)
And come out to the Bagdad, b!X. It’ll be fun! And also because otherwise, I’ll spend all night shouting spoilers at your window.
