So I saw Adventureland last night (EHHHH), but before the movie they showed a trailer for Away We Go—the new dramedy from director Sam Mendes, writer Dave Eggers and starring Maya Rudolph and Jim from The Office. IT LOOKS REALLY GREAT. However… I do have a question. Watch the trailer first.

Looks good, huh? So. Question: Are the main characters mentally retarded? Because these two characters were setting off my retard-adar. Some people have gay-dar… I have retard-adar. Or should it be retard-ar? Anyway, the person I saw the movie with thought I was crazy, but I’m telling you I was getting a VERY strong “Rosie O’Donnell in Riding the Bus with My Sister” vibe.

AM I WRONG??

Bang bang, choo-choo train, let me see you shake that thang. Wm. Steven Humphrey is the editor-in-chief of the Portland Mercury and has held the job since 2000. (So don’t get any funny ideas.)

  1. There is retarded, and then there is “just not that bright.” It looks more like the “just not that bright,” and not actual “IQ under 75” sort of thing.

  2. I think you’re half right. Context clues lead me to believe that Jim from the office is supposed to be some kind of mentally challenged (i.e. itinerary stapled to the inside of his jacket).

  3. Sensitive neo-folk? Check. Bearded hipster? Check. Quirky? Check. Hasn’t this movie been made, like, a hundred times since 1995?

  4. oh please. Snarky comment using the “check” format? Check. Hasn’t your comment been written an equal number of times since 1995? Check.
