I gotta tell you, guys. It’s day 29 and the only thing I can muster is a Widmer Hef from the bottle as I sit in front of the tiny A/C in my living room. I’m not so much tasting the beer as existing with it. I’m in the beer and the beer is in me.

And yet, this afternoon I stopped by Belmont Station and plundered the coolers for some 22’s from Breweries who’s product I’ve yet to sample this month. It’s become an automatic response, a compulsion, and I fear I’ve been changed for good.

Anyway, this is today’s post. Short and sweet. Me and a common Portland beer, late in the evening, thinking of an uncertain future. It’s a beer summit of one.

Shit, why didn’t Obama look to Oregon for his white house brews? Why not choose American beers? Ahhh well… Best not to think of that. Down that road lies anger and madness. All I want to do is finish this beer and go to sleep between this fan and this window.

  1. The head brewer at Sam Adams contacted the white house and offered to supply the brew. They’re currently the largest fully American brewery, they’re located in the area where the offense that preempted this meeting occurred (which all three have ties to), and being named after one of our countries forefathers doesn’t hurt their cause either. Bud and becks are belgian now, red stripe is jamaican, and blue moon is made by miller/coors, which is now owned by an english conglomerate. I read a news story saying that the white house traditionally hasn’t stocked any non-american beers since the johnson administration, so the choice of red stripe was “controversial”. I guess the white house and the media haven’t kept up with the BMC buyouts.

I had a hard time buying beer yesterday. I went to one of my normal spots, which has a great selection of bottles, and I just stared at the shelves. I rode my bike there at the peak of the heat, and I just couldn’t figure out what would satisfy me. Usually I have the opposite problem. I want a little of everything, and I have to narrow it down. I “settled” on a 4 pack of dogfish head 90 minute.
