Hey, Portlander. There’s an election happening sometime next year that you might be half-assed interested in. It’s for police commissioner Dan Saltzman’s seat on city council. So far we’ve interviewed Ed Garren, Spencer Burton, and Jason Renaud, who are all running for the seat. Mary Volm, a late entrant into the race, has declined repeated requests for an interview.

This morning, via email, comes news of a series of opportunities for you to get to know Ed Garren:

Saturday, December 19.
9 am to 2:30 pm
Breakfast with Ed at the Overlook Restaurant
Skidmore and Maryland (one block east of N. Interstate Ave.)

3pm to 5pm
“Holiday Gluhwein With Ed Garren”
Take a break from shopping for a gluhwein – mullied spiced German wine served warm!
(outside event on sidewalk – cafe tables only – approved by Greta, owner)

If you manage to get to any of these events, please send us your reports. What did you think of the candidate? How was the Gluhwein? Oh, and take pictures. Lots of pictures.

Matt Davis was news editor of the Mercury from 2009 to May 2010.

  1. Since you cut our last thread off at 800 posts, we are gonna have to talk about Mary Volm here instead.

Do you have any guess as to why she is avoiding the Mercury? Simply refusing to talk to you says more about her than anything she might actually say. At this point, one has to wonder if she “isn’t a serious candidate” or “is unwilling to deal with dissenting opinions” or “holds personal grudges” or any number of other things. I mean, a political candidate that can’t return calls from the media in a week is, AT BEST, incompetent.

  2. I hope Ed isn’t offering his guests anything of value because that would be a violation of city election rules and would disqualify him from public financing (although I doubt he’ll qualify anyway).

  3. @talken with Volm:
    1) I don’t drink coffee.
    2) Matt Davis has been trying to get on her schedule for a week, and he is important and has contacts, where as I’m not, so I figure it will be after the primary before I actually got to the top priority on her schedule.
    3) I don’t have time to interview each candidate personally, (nor do they have time to talk to each voter individually,) that is why we have something called the NEWS MEDIA to do it for us.
    4) Because if this is how she treats newspaper reporters, I bet she isn’t very fun to actually hang out with in real life either, and I’d be alone than with someone unpleasant.

But besides those thing, sure, why not?

  4. There is several opportunities for you to connect with Mary Volm. Happy Hour-meet and greets are planned at local small business across the city for the next four weeks.

I cant imagine, why I would as a candidate, want to talk to a hostile, misinformed and biased reporters; when on limited time, so many positive reporters are happy to talk to you.

I dont know, what would you do as a candidate?

I must say, Matt Davis has been doing some good reporting on police corruption and encourage him to do more.
